Read More	Stratford Courier November 1951 Nels Sandell was born in Lund, Sweden, April 26, 1868, and passed away Monday, Oct. 29, 1951, in the Avenue Nursing home at Des Moines at the age of 83 years, 6 months and 3 days. At the age of 19 years he left his native country and came to Iowa, locating at Stratford, where he resided for 61 years. He was united in marriage to Alma Rosengren Sept. 16, 1893. To this union two sons and one daughter were born: Dr. Carl L. Sandell of Des Moines, Maynard L. Sandell of Rochester, N.Y., and Orlow Sandell, who passed away in 1917. For many years Mr. Sandell operated a blacksmith shop here but later embarked in the plumbing and heating business, which he operated for a number of years or until failing health necessitated his retirement when he went to Des Moines to make his home three years ago. Mr. Sandell was a devout worker and member of Calvary Methodist church in Stratford for many years and also taught a boy's Sunday school class. He was a past master of Acorn lodge No. 601 of Stratford. He had served as mayor of the town, head counsel and clerk of the Modern Woodman of America Camp, and held other civic positions. Deceased was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and daughter; one brother and two sisters in Sweden. He is survived by two sons, one sister in Sweden, other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held in Calvary Methodist church Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 31, at 1:30 o'clock, with the pastor the Rev. Otto S. Steele officiating. Masonic funeral rites were held at the graveside in Oakwood cemetery, where the remains were laid to rest. The pallbearers were: E.F. Erickson, F.C. Rose, T.G. Anderson, W.R. Holstrom, Rudy Hubner and Rufus Rexroat. Those from out of town attending the funeral services were: Dr. and Mrs. Carl L. Sandell and Miss Iva Johnson of Des Moines, Dr. T.E. Williams and Mrs. Elizabeth Maxwell of Nevada.
