Read More	Mrs. Neola Eckard Ends Her Life By Taking Poison Tragedy struck at a Milford home late Easter Sunday afternoon when Mrs. Neola Eckard, 34, well-known in this area, took her own life by drinking poison. Mrs. Eckard had been seen by friends as she walked along the street toward home about 5 o'clock, looking particularly attractive in her Easter outfit. The attending physician estimated that she drank the poison at about 5:15. Death occurred at about 6:30. Mrs. Eckhard had worked in various stores in Milford for several years and was one of the most popular clerks in town. She started working at Munson's Grocery and Market only last Monday morning. Previous to that she had been employed for some time at the Serr and Ellingson store. After she drank the poison that killed her so quickly, Mrs. Eckard wrote a letter to her daughters and parents and had started a letter to a local friend but her hands evidently stiffened and she was unable to finish it. In the letters, she accounted for her act by saying she was "too tired" to keep on. This was interpreted to mean that she felt completely exhausted after having worked and kept up her home for so many years. The envelope was addressed as follows: "My Folks and Daughters" and the letter read "My Dear Folks and Girls. This is a terrible thing I have done, but I am just too tired to fight any longer. It will hurt you at first but after a while I won't be a worry to you any more. You girls are such good girls. Maybe your Dad will take over his responsibilities now where I have left off. Don't think too harsh of me. I love you all dearly. I seem to be a mistake all the way through. But I have meant right. This last year has been the happiest I have ever known. If it could all be like it has, live would be grand. Goodbye. Lots of Love, Neola." According to the story as reconstructed for The Mail, Mrs. Eckard apparently visited friends or went for a short walk late in the afternoon. When she returned to her home, she sent her daughter, Arlys, 12, to the basement for food for supper and probably took the poison at that time. Apparently wanting someone to be with the children during the coming ordeal, she sent Arlys after Mr. and Mrs. Matt Long, family friends, instructing them to come at once. Mr. and Mrs. Long returned home with Arlys and visited a few minutes with Mrs. Eckard before their suspicions were aroused and they left to call a physician. Before his arrival Arlys had summoned Mrs. Ira Speer and she arrived at the time the doctor did, then returned home to summon Mrs. Eckard's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Lloyd. Mr. Speer and brother, Cecil, who was visiting at the Speer home went to assist the doctor, but nothing could be done to save Mrs. Eckard's life. The doctor had pronounced her dead just as her parents arrived. At this time her daughter, Constance, 11, was at the movie and the other daughter, Eunice, 14, was at the home of a friend. Both were immediately summoned home. Mrs. Eckard was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Lloyd, well-known Milford township farmers. She was reared on their farm near Milford and was married to Sherman Eckard. They lived for a brief time in Mason City and then moved to Milford. About two years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Eckard were divorced and he moved to California. Eunice made her home with him until living conditions prompted her father to send her back to Milford. Although separated from Mr. Eckard, Mrs. Eckard had always taught the children to love and respect their father. She and her sisters all attended Milford public school. Mr. Eckard was notified of the tragedy Sunday night by telephone. He wired Tuesday that he would come to Milford for the funeral and to visit his daughters and give them whatever aid possible. He is employed in a defense plant there. A late wire was received Wednesday from Ogden, Utah, stating he would arrive in Omaha this (Thursday) evening and in Milford Friday morning. Neola Margaret Eckard was born Sept. 9, 1909 at Gravity, Iowa to Sam and Martha Lloyd and passed away in her home in Milford Sunday evening, April 9, 1944 at the age of 34 years and seven months. Her parents moved to Dickinson county when she was four years old and established a home in Okoboji township where Neola grew to young womanhood. She started in the first grade at Okoboji Consolidated school and continued there until she graduated from high school. She was active in all school affairs and popular with her schoolmates. When twenty years of age she was united in marriage to Sherman Eckard of Milford and to this union three daughters were born, Eunice, Arlys, and Connie. After the marriage they resided in Milford for one year and then moved to Mason City, where they lived about nine years. Four of those years Mrs. Eckard was employed in a restaurant at Mason City. Mr. and Mrs. Eckard moved back to Milford about four years ago and since then Mrs. Eckard had been employed in different stores in town. Besides her three children and parents, she is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Foster Smitley of Terril and Betty Lou at home, and two brothers, Ed and Glea, both farming near Milford and a grandmother, Mrs. M. A. Wadleigh. Many other relatives and friends mourn her tragic passing. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. J. O. Smith Saturday afternoon at two o'clock at the Federated church here and burial will be in Okoboji Cemetery at Arnolds Park. Stores to Close Saturday Afternoon: Most of the stores in Milford will be closed Saturday afternoon for the funeral of Mrs. Neola Eckard. (The Milford Mail, Milford, IA April 13, 1944)
