Nettie Pearl (Hodge) Powell, daughter of Thomas and Jane (Clark) Hodge was born April 19, 1883, in Cherokee county. Her early education started at what was known as the Keck school, later going to the Crom school. Her Christian education began at the Morning Star Church and continued at the Meadow Star Church. She was converted at the age of twelve and united with the church August 11, 1895. She was united in marriage to Austin Powell February 24, 1904, at her home, and has resided in Cherokee county most of her life, with the exception of living in Pierson a short while and at her son's home for three years. She was a most loyal member of the Missionary Society and Ladies Aid Society for over fifty years, also being a Sunday School teacher for several years. Although her health and eyesight began to fail, and she was unable to do the many activities she enjoyed, her spirit and determination never weakened, her interest in her church, family, community, neighbors and friends were her utmost interest, their troubles were her troubles too. Her cheery smile will be greatly missed, as she enjoyed to have Sunday arrive so she could attend Sunday School and church services. Survivors include her husband, Austin and son Dale, five grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren, also two brothers, George Hodge of Merrill and Thomas Hodge of Pierson; also a host of relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Mrs. Anna Lease of Madison, South Dakota, Mrs. Agnes Crippen of Marshalltown, Iowa, and a brother, Will Hodge of Washta, Iowa.
