Banta, son of Smith and Mary Banta, was born in Marion Co., Iowa, August 16, 1862, died December 23, 1931 at the home of his nephew, Earl Bingham, at North Loup, aged 69 years, 4 months, and 7 days. He grew to manhood in Iowa and was married to Mary Ollie Foster, January 11, 1883 in Knoxville, Marion Co., Iowa, and to that union were born 10 children, 6 boys and 4 girls. Five of whom preceded him in death. Those living are James of North Loup, Fred of Lyman, Nebraska, Ted of Maysville, Arkansas, Elsie Whiting of Ord, and Nona Pronske, Grand Island: 14 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Besides the immediate family are 3 brothers, 3 sisters in Iowa and Mrs. Belle Bingham of North Loup, and several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. In their early married life, Mr. and Mrs. Banta moved to Colorado. After a few years, they came to Nebraska, living first in Boyd County, then in Scotia, and on a ranch in Greeley County, before moving to North Loup. With the exception of a few years in Florida and Arizona, Mr. Banta has made his home in Nebraska all these years. Mrs. Banta passed away September 14, 1919. Since that time, Mr. Banta has never been satisfied and has moved about staying with his children and nephews. He was a loving father, always scattering sunshine. He will be missed by all who knew him. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the M. E. Church in Scotia, Rev. Leslie A. Moore, pastor, being in charge. The body was laid to rest in the Scotia Cemetery by the side of his wife. "A loving form from us has gone, A voice we loved is still, And when our earthly cares are done, We bend to the Maker's will."
