Description	:	Ole Sandal, pioneer of the Moenville area, died at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre October 29. He was 85 years, 2 months and 13 days old. He had been in failing health for several years but able to get around. Mr. Sandal was admitted to the hospital the day before he died for medical care, when he died suddenly of a heart attack. Read More	Ole Sandal, pioneer of the Moenville area, died at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre October 29. He was 85 years, 2 months and 13 days old. He had been in failing health for several years but able to get around. Mr. Sandal was admitted to the hospital the day before he died for medical care, when he died suddenly of a heart attack. Ole Sandal was born at Rokystove, Norway, Aug. 16, 1872. He came to this country in 1890, at the age of 18 and located at Bristol for a few years. Here he married Anna Olson Feb. 14, 1895. To this union 11 children were born; two daughters, Alice and Afel and Mrs. Sandal preceded him in death. He knew the rugged way of making a living for his large family and did freighting with horses in the early days and was an excellent carpenter. He also did some custom threshing along with farming and raching until his health failed. He was one of the founders of the Deep Creek Church of the Moenville community and seldom missed a service even in the last few years. He returned twice to his native land of Norway; the last time in 1947. He was fondly called "Grandpa" Sandal by many. Mr. Sandal leaves to mourn him, his nine children, Pete, who lived at home with him, John of Milesville, Walter of Powell, Roy and Ester Curry of Pierre, Minnie Harris of Rapid City, Ida Bentley and Arthur in the home community and Conrad of Fargo, ND; 31 grandchildren and 44 great grandchildren; two brothers and four sisters as well as many other relatives and friends. Much to his liking his family gathered for a reunion several times a year at the home place. Funeral services were held at the Deep Creek Church, Friday, November 1, 1957. Rev. Arvid Myhrwold of Midland gave the devotional service. Dotson's Funeral Home of Pierre were in charge of the funeral arrangements. Music was by Mr. and Mrs. Ray Noble of Midland and Rev. Myhrwold sang a hymn in Norwegian. He was buried in the family lot in the Deep Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers were his six sons with honoraries being William Markwed, Gaylord Hudson, R. C. Neuhauser, Lorrain Olson, Carl Paulson, John Schanzenbach, Sam Hilmoe, and Herman Lovald. Those coming from a distance were Mr and Mrs Conrad Sandal, Fargo, ND, John Sandal and Mr and Mrs Paul Jorgenson of Webster, Anton Olson and sons Kenneth and Arthur of Bristol; Mrs Richard Hyde of Minneapolis; Mr and Mrs Evan Harris and daughter of Mott, ND; Mr and Mrs Ray Harris of Watertown; Kenneth Bentley of Chadron, Nebraska; Mrs Douglas Nelson and Jackie Sandal both of Sioux Falls; Billy Sandal of Canton, JoAnn Sandal of Yankton and Susie Bentley of Brookings. Grandpa Sandal will be greatly missed by his children as well as by his friends. His life was exemplary of his high principals, his Christian faith and joyous outlook on life. He was a good friend and father.
