McBride Oliver Austin McBride, second son of Benjamin F. and Phoebe (Phebe) McBride, was born near Delhi, Iowa, on June 15, 1871, and passed to his eternal reward at St. Edward on April 20, 1944, at the age of 72 years, ten months and five days. When he was two years old his parents moved to Boone county, locating on the farm which was to be his boyhood home, on June 17, 1873. Here he grew to manhood, and as a son of pioneers he knew the privations, toil and hardships that came to a life in the west at that time. He also knew the pleasures and good times that came with the neighborliness and good will that always marked the pioneer home. He received his education in a district school, and when a young man became a member of the M. E. Pinnacle Hill church. For a number of years he was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Mr. McBride was united in marriage to Miss Daisy Aldrich on April 27, 1901 at Belgrade, NE. by Rev. A.L. Kellogg, Minister M.E. Church. They immediately took up housekeeping on his farm, where they spent all of their married life with the exception of two years, one of which was spent in Oregon and the other in St. Edward. To this union two sons came to bless their home, Major H. Verle McBride, in Corsiea, and Hugh A. McBride, of Kansas City, Mo. Mr. McBride has been a good son, a kind and loving father and husband, and a splendid neighbor. He is survived by his wife, two sons, three grandchildren, and three brothers and three sisters. He was the first of a family of seven to pass on. Funeral services for Mr. McBride were held at the St. Edward Methodist church on Saturday at two o'clock with Rev. E. S. Pangburn officiating. The two songs, "I'm a Child of the King" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," which were chosen by Mr. McBride, were sung by Mrs. L. R. Scott and Mrs. Edward Nelson, while Mrs. Herman Wieland presided at the piano. Pallbearers were James Weldon, Jake Hildbrandt, Ed DeVore, Frank Smith, Glenn Williams and Jake Hirsch. Those attending the funeral from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Randall (Randles) and family, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sebastian, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Ward McBride, and Jessie and Noble Rearden, all of Cedar Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. William McBride, Mr. and Mr. B .F. McBride and Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Cornwell, of Belgrade; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cornwell, Albion; Mrs. H. Verle McBride, of Burlington, Iowa; and Mr. and Mrs. Hugh McBride of Kansas City, Mo. The following is a poem loved by Mr. McBride and requested by him to be read at his funeral. Let me live, O Mighty Master, Such a life as men should know, Tasting triumph and disaster, Joy--and not too much of woe; Let me run the gamut over; Let me fight and love and laugh And when I'm beneath the clover, Let this be my epitaph: Here lies one who took his chances In life's busy world of men; Battled fate and circumstances Fought and fell, and fought again; Won sometimes but did no crowing, Lost sometimes but didn't wail Took his beating but kept going Never let his courage fall. He was fallible and human, Therefore, loved and understood Both by fellow-man and woman Whether good or not so good; Kept his spirit undiminished Never failed to help a friend; Played the game till it was finished Lived a sportsman to the end. -----obituary St. Edward Advance, April, 1944
