Read More	Oliver Perry Kennedy was the son of William Hugh Kennedy and Margaret Jane Ralston Kennedy of Brown County, Ohio, with Margaret Jane in 1855, as a widow, relocating to Douglas County, Kansas. He was the grandson of Jonathan (John) Ralston and Elizabeth "Betsy" Pitzer Ralston of Brown County, Ohio In 1845, his father William Hugh Kennedy died suddenly in a cholera epidemic in Brown County, Ohio. With Margaret Jane, Hugh was the father of thirteen children, all born in Brown County, Ohio. His Kennedy family was of Irish ancestry. His mother's Ralston family was of Scot heritage, but the family was forcibly relocated to Ireland at the order of the English King James. Because of their physical torture in Ireland, the Ralston family came to America, first settling in Pennsylvania and thence to Ohio. When he was twenty-one years old, he, his mother and about twenty-five related members of the Kennedy family, in March of 1855 relocated from Brown County, Ohio to Douglas County, Kansas (then Kansas Territory) on the Wakarusa River in an area they called Kennedy Valley where they could stake out a land claim for $1.00 per acre. Life in the Kennedy Valley in Kansas was very difficult and one by one the Kennedys moved elsewhere. Family lore said he received his nickname of "Scott" when he was swept into the Ohio River while he was still residing in Brown County, Ohio. General Winfield Scott was traveling down the River at the time and directed his soldiers to bring him out of the water, saving his life. After that, Oliver Perry Kennedy instructed his family and friends to call him Scott in honor of that event. When he was twenty years old, he met Louise Price (b. February 4, 1836) in Illinois, (where his older brother William Bainbridge Kennedy lived at that time) preceding his journey to Douglas County, Kansas. They had one daughter, Jennie Lind Kennedy, who was born December 8, 1855 in Douglas County, Kansas and lived until 1927, who married Emery Shepherd Bowen. Sadly, Louise died in 1858 in Douglas County, Kansas when she was just twenty-three years old. At age twenty-six, Scott married, secondly, Martha M. Woodruff on August 12, 1860 in Douglas County, Kansas. They had five children, all born in Douglas County, Kansas. Their children were: Franklin "Frank" Riley Kennedy, Lizzie Belle Kennedy, Melinda Kennedy, Margaret M. "Mollie" Kennedy Halderman and Fred Joseph Kennedy, all born in Douglas County, Kansas. He was the longest surviving member of his family generation of thirteen children.
