Description	:	Orland Jack "O.J." Bates, 93, of Fairfield, died at Parkview Care Center. He was born to Harley and Lila Jacobs Bates. He lived northwest of Fairfield and attended Hard Scrabble School. O.J. studied Dairy Industry at Iowa State College and in 1937 he tried out for the St. Louis Cardinals. For nine months O.J. worked for the CCC in Keosauqua, and then in Burlington before setting off to California with his best friend when the war broke out in 1941. Bates, 93, of Fairfield, died at Parkview Care Center. He was born to Harley and Lila Jacobs Bates. He lived northwest of Fairfield and attended Hard Scrabble School. O.J. studied Dairy Industry at Iowa State College and in 1937 he tried out for the St. Louis Cardinals. For nine months O.J. worked for the CCC in Keosauqua, and then in Burlington before setting off to California with his best friend when the war broke out in 1941. In southern California, O.J. was working for Lockheed Air Craft, when he met Marie C. Dickason Ford in Pasadena. They married in 1942 in Lancaster, Missouri while returning to Iowa to register for the draft. The couple lived in California for the next 21 years and they owned a chicken ranch. At this time O.J. studied design engineering at UCLA and USC, going to work for Howard Hughes Aircraft, where he was present to see Hughes' famous "Spruce Goose". In the space program O.J. was involved in the designs that first put a man in space and future moon landings. Further work was with Rocket Dyne on rocket engines and missles. In 1961, O.J. and Marie moved back to Fairfield to run the family business of the Bates Motel. Always an avid golfer, O.J. designed putters while not on the course. He was a member of the Walton Club and Fairfield Golf & Country Club, and sposored and bowled on the Bates Motel Team. In 1979 the motel and their home burned, they later owned Bates' Book Nook in Ottumwa while living in Batavia. In 2001 a move was made to Calu Apartments. O.J. continued to play snooker at age 90 at the Eagles Club, and was a 50 year member of the Elks Club. Survivors include daughters, Olivia (Gene) Smith of Bunceton, Missouri and Suzan (Patrick) Kessel of Fairfield; stepdaughter, Kathryn Cook of Hartford City, Indiana; brother, Max Bates of South Bend, Indiana; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and one great-grandson. Funeral service was held at Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.
