Description	:	Orlon James Higgins was born to James and Zoe Higgins on November 7, 1932 in Stuart, Nebraska. He grew up on a ranch near Brocksburg, Nebraska, where he attended grade school. He grew up on a ranch near Brocksburg, Nebraska, where he attended grade school. In 1950, he graduated from Keya Paha County High School in Springview, Nebraska. He married Shirley Ann Kramer on January 16, 1954 at the Sacred Heart Church in Naper, Nebraska. To this union two daughters were born: Marcia Ann and Monica Lynn. Orlon kept very busy helping his Dad on the ranch with milking cows and cutting/stacking hay until 1959. At that time, he went to Hall Barber School in Omaha, Nebraska. Upon graduating in 1960, the family moved to Loop City, Nebraska, where he completed a three month apprenticeship. They then moved back to the ranch to help his parents where he also barbered for the surrounding community. In 1969, the family moved to Gregory, South Dakota where Orlon's long-term barbering career began. Orlon's barbering career extended over 50 years. He really enjoyed having Higgins Barber Shop on Main Street where he spent hours talking with his customers. He also went to the nursing home on a regular basis to cut hair. He was a family man who enjoyed fishing with his grandkids in the Mills community. His grandchildren fondly remember him baking cakes for them and bringing them bags of candy. He would greet them with a nice hug and a whisker burn! Orlon's great grandchildren were also an important part of his life bringing him a lot of laughter. Over the past fifteen years, many of Orlon's family and friends have enjoyed his home made refrigerator pickles. He also loved sporting events and was seen on a regular basis watching the Gregory athletic teams play. In past years, Orlon was a member of the Commercial Club, Knights of Columbus and a community volunteer. He has been a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church for 46 years. Orlon passed away on April 5, 2015 at the Burke Community Hospital surrounded by loving family members. He is preceded in death by his wife Shirley Higgins, his daughter Marcia Cook, son-in-law Bill Cook, sister Lila Higgins, mother/father James/Zoe Higgins, and mother/father in-law Pete/Mable Kramer, sisters/brothers-in-law Katherine (Melvin) Parlet, Stella (Bill) Hermsen, Joe (Alyce) Kramer, Geraldine Kramer, Paul Kramer, Frank Kramer, and Harold Carley.
