Description	:	Oscar D. Smotherman was born March 5, 1922, at Birch Tree, Mo., the son of William F. and Olga (Kohler) Smotherman. He went to be with the Lord and with his wife Sylvia on Jan. 19, 2008 in Springfield, Mo., at the age of 85 years. He was united in marriage to Sylvia M. Ledgerwood on July 27, 1947, in Birch Tree, Mo., and to this union nine children were born, Dale, Donna, Duane, Doris, Geraldine, Rolves, Rolland, Chester and Nicky. Oscar was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sylvia, of 58 years; five brothers, Albert, Bernard, Raymond, Billy and one infant brother; four sisters, Hazel, Mabel, Maxine and Ruth; and three grandchildren, Neil, Wendy and Jason. He is survived by one brother, Elvin, of St. Louis, Mo.; two sisters, Gladys Johnson of Fenton, Mo., and Dorothy Bishop of Maryland Heights, Mo.; nine children, Dale Smotherman and wife, Wanda, of Birch Tree, Mo., Donna Cornman and husband, Bill, of Mountain View, Mo., Duane Smotherman and wife, Mary, of Birch Tree, Mo., Doris Ellett and husband, Jake, of Mountain View, Mo., Geraldine Pittman and husband, Mike, of Mountain View, Mo., Rolves Smotherman and wife, Susan, of Birch Tree, Mo., Rolland Smotherman and wife, Missy, of Birch Tree, Mo., Chester Smotherman and wife, Ralene, of Birch Tree, Mo., and Nicky Smotherman and wife, Gail, of Winona, Mo.; 24 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a special long-time friend, Vince Rolves and wife, Loretta, of Carlyle, Ill. Oscar entered into the service of his country on Nov. 5, 1942. On April 1, 1943, he was transferred to North Africa and served in the European Theatre. He was wounded in battle on Nov. 25, 1943, and was later captured and kept in a POW camp for 18 months. While in the POW camp, he met a lifelong friend, Vince Rolves, which later was considered part of the family. On Oct. 7, 1945, he received a Purple Heart, a European African Middle Eastern Theatre medal with two bronze stars and a Good Conduct Medal. He was a loving husband, brother, father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by all that knew and loved him. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008, in Yarber Chapel, Mountain View. Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery, Teresita, Mo., under the direction of Yarber Mortuary, Mountain View, Mo.
