Smith was, born in Fennimore, Wisconsin, October 28, 1860, and departed this life October 2, 1924, at his home in Chadron, Nebraska. On July 22, 1885, he was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Newton in Lincoln, Nebraska. The same day they moved to Kearney, Nebraska where they resided until they made their home in Chadron. Some five years ago, Mr. Smith visited Chadron and purchased property at Dakota Junction, five miles west of town. Two and a half years later, in the month of June, he moved his family to our city. Mr. Smith was characterized as an aggressive tireless worker, an upright and honorable citizen, taking an active interest in the welfare of his town, community and country. Before coming here he held many prominent positions of trust and responsibility in the state and city where he lived. All of which were in addition to his life's work of agriculture. His business ability and sterling character were soon recognized as a valuable asset to our city. At the time of his death he was secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, Fair Association, and county assessor. His interest in material things did not lesson his interest in things spiritual. With his wife and children, he at once transferred their church membership from the old home church to the Methodist church in Chadron, that be might better promote the interests of his Master's kingdom. Mr. Smith has been very active in political affairs in the state for many years, gaining much prominence over the state through his work as president of the National Farm Congress; president of the Good Roads association; member of the State Board of Agriculture; and the first president of the Farmers Elevator Company of Nebraska. The following clipping from the editorial columns of the State Journal reveals his standing in state affairs: "The death at Chadron of O. G. Smith, of Kearney, takes from the state a man who has given much time to public work. He was first known to Kearney people as the state industrial school farmer. After that he was interested in pure bred hogs. From the farm it was natural that his attention should be called to marketing. He was one of the early members and potential forms in the Nebraska livestock and elevator association, an organ which fared many concessions from railroads for cooperative concerns. He was practical in viewing problems that arose, and his ability and counsel were assets in the days when the fight against the grain buying combinations were being made. Mr. Smith was a frequent visitor to Lincoln and was as well known here as many of the other public men of the day." Besides his many friends throughout the state, and countless numbers of business associates and the friends at Chadron, Mr. Smith leaves his wife and four children to mourn his departure from this life. His wife, Mrs. Jennie Smith, and two youngest daughters, Misses May and Frances, are a the present making their home in Chadron. Another daughter, Miss Lucy Smith, of Tacoma, Washington, and his son, Ernest Smith of Dakota Junction, are the other children. He has one brother, living at Los Angeles, California. Following the funeral services in the Methodist church Saturday afternoon by Rev. O. S. Baker, the deceased was laid to rest in the Greenwood cemetary, near Chadron. -------------------------
