Description	:	Paul Benedict Schmitz, 83, of Baileyville, died Friday, October 23, 1998, at Crestview Manor Care Home in Seneca. He was transferred from the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca to the care home on October 20, 1998. He was born January 12, 1915, on a farm northeast of Baileyville, the son of John L. and Mary Oenbring Schmitz. He attended the Clear Creek School and worked on the family farm. Read More	Paul Benedict Schmitz, 83, of Baileyville, died Friday, October 23, 1998, at Crestview Manor Care Home in Seneca. He was transferred from the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca to the care home on October 20, 1998. He was born January 12, 1915, on a farm northeast of Baileyville, the son of John L. and Mary Oenbring Schmitz. He attended the Clear Creek School and worked on the family farm. On October 12, 1938, he married Mary Ann Bergman at St. Mary's Church, St. Benedict. She survives at the home. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on October 12, 1998. Paul was a farmer/stockman and operated a dairy with the help of his family. He enjoyed horses which he used in farming in his younger days. In February, 1979, he retired and moved to Baileyville. He still enjoyed going to the farm. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards. Paul was a friendly man who was devoted to his family and his church. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville and a former member of St. Mary's Church in St. Benedict. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus #1769 at Seneca for over 50 years. He served on the Clear Creek Township Board for a number of years. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; sons, Julian Schmitz, Axtell; Regis Schmitz, Baileyville; Cyril Schmitz, Baileyville; Gilbert Schmitz, Baileyville; daughters, Marita Gallagher, Kansas City, MO; Roseann Mitchell, Topeka; Edna Kuhlman, Topeka; Evelyn Heinen, Seneca; Kathy Heinen, Seneca; brother, Ambrose Schmitz, Baileyville; sisters, Mary Reinecke, Seneca; Rosella Bergman, Seneca; 40 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents, sons, Benedict Schmitz on December 16, 1943; Kenneth Schmitz, on June 19, 1953; Donald Schmitz, September 28, 1980; six brothers, Vincent Schmitz; Edward Schmitz; Silverius Schmitz; Virgil Schmitz; John Schmitz; and Francis Schmitz. Mass of Christian Burial was held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Baileyville. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, St. Benedict. Courier-Tribune Seneca, KS October 28, 1998 pg 4
