Description	:	Paul was born August 25, 1823 in the small village of Vilslev, located about 8 miles northeast of the larger town of Ribe, Denmark, the 4th of 7 children of Christoffer Poulsen and Anna Michelsdatter. His family had a small piece of land and his father made barrels and kites. At the age of 17, he was listed in the census of Hunderup, Ribe County, as a servant on the farm of Niels Pedersen. Read More	Paul was born August 25, 1823 in the small village of Vilslev, located about 8 miles northeast of the larger town of Ribe, Denmark, the 4th of 7 children of Christoffer Poulsen and Anna Michelsdatter. His family had a small piece of land and his father made barrels and kites. At the age of 17, he was listed in the census of Hunderup, Ribe County, as a servant on the farm of Niels Pedersen. In 1846 he entered active military service in the 6th Infantry Battalion, Company 4 of the Danish Army. He served with distinction in the 1st Schleswig War, being honored with the Danish Cross by King Christian VII for rescuing his commanding officer from death on the battlefield. The Danish Cross is quite a high honor, similar to the US Medal of Honor. After the war, he returned to Vilslev, and on October 14, 1852 he married Anna Kjerstina Gejl (Geil) at Hjerting, Denmark. They had a small farm at Gredstedbro where, like his father, he worked as a barrel maker. Paul and Anna had eight children, the oldest, Anna died in Denmark at age 21. Paul's older children emigrated in 1878 and 1880, following other relatives and countrymen to the large Danish settlement in Howard County, Nebraska. Paul, age 58, his wife Anna and their three youngest children, Karen, age 18, Peter, age 11 and Pauline, 10 arrived in New York on May 20, 1882 on the ship Assyrian Monarch. Paul bought 40 acres in Dannebrog Township of Howard County from Lauritz Hansen for $535. Paul's time in the US was short; he died at age 60, on August 25, 1883 from becoming overheated, no doubt unaccustomed to the heat and humidity of Nebraska summers.
