A funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 29 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 123 Highland Ave., in Pierre. Paul Hinzman was born April 26, 1920, in Avon, S.D. He was the youngest child of Alexander and Johanna (Radack) Hinzmann. He and his siblings Harold, Louise and Ervin moved with their parents from Avon to a ranch in Ziebach County, south of Eagle Butte in 1924. He attended rural school through the eighth grade. He then ranched with his mother and sister after the death of his father. Paul married Shirley Mader on Sept. 11, 1948 and to this union eight children were born. They began their family life on the ranch where Paul was raised before moving to Eagle Butte in 1952. In addition to continuing the ranch operation with their sons' help, Paul and Shirley owned and operated Hinzman Hardware and Laundromat. A car wash was later added to the business. Paul and his sons also performed custom windrowing. After selling their businesses in 1983, Paul worked for the South Dakota Department of Transportation. He retired in 1990. Commitment to family and community were pillars of Paul's life. He served as a Dewey County Commissioner for 20 years, was on the Eagle Butte Volunteer Fire Department, and a board member of War Hawk Civil Defense, the Eagle Butte Community Clinic and South Dakota Fifth Planning District. He was involved in Eagle Butte Civic organizations including Community Club, Rodeo Club and Rifleman's Club. Paul was a member of the Eagle Butte Congregational United Church of Christ and held volunteer positions on the trustees, deacons and stewardship committees. His dedication and spirit lead to his being named Eagle Butte Citizen of the Year in 1985. In 1995, Paul and Shirley moved to Pierre and built a new home where they welcomed their many family members and friends. The couple enjoyed traveling together, especially to visit their extended family from Florida to Alaska. Paul was a member and regular attendee of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Pierre. Paul was known for his quick wit and was always ready to show a picture of his "Pride and Joy" to anyone or share a jawbreaker candy with a grandchild or other youngster. His family relishes and passes on his ability to tell engaging stories. Paul Hinzman is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley, and their eight children and their spouses, 19 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren:Dean and Regina Hinzman of Wall; Brandon and Denea Hinzman, Cash and Ireland of Box Elder; SSgt. Robert and Brandi Hinzman, Tanner, Kameron, Iain and Alexandra of Clarksville, Tenn.; and Patricia Hinzman of Durango, Colo. Ken and Wanda Hinzman of Columbia Falls, Mont.; Andrea Hinzman and fiancé Jeff Merrifield of Seattle, Wash.; Kyle and Lindsay Hinzman, Garrett and Allie of Kalispell, Mont.; Clint and Kristie Hinzman, Dani, Lauren and Josie of Columbia Falls.Lorie and Roger Steinhauer and Joshua of Custer; Jeremy Steinhauer of Grand Junction, Colo.; and Bethany Steinhauer of Spearfish. Les and Faye Hinzman of Bellevue, Idaho; Jacqui and Shane Morel and Caleb of Sheridan, Wyo.; Paul and Rachel Belden and Makayla of Kelso, Wash.; and Todd Belden of Sheridan.Larry and Melanie Hinzman, Megan and Alexa of Fairbanks, Alaska. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Ervin; brother Harold and his wife Mary; sister Louise Bringman and her husband Earl; granddaughter Anna Mohr; and great granddaughter Sadie Morel.
