Description	:	Paul Peter Claassen died at age 19. He was the son of Henry A. and Helen Claassen, who are buried nearby. His parents both spoke German, but his father immigrated from Germany in 1892, and his mother from Russia in 1884. Catherine the Great invited Mennonites, Lutherans and Jews to come from Germany to help settle Russia. She promised these Germans religious freedom. Read More	Paul Peter Claassen died at age 19. He was the son of Henry A. and Helen Claassen, who are buried nearby. Catherine the Great invited Mennonites, Lutherans and Jews to come from Germany to help settle Russia. She promised these Germans religious freedom. The Mennonites fled first, coming to the United States and Canada in the 1880's. The Lutherans and Jews, who were not pacifists, and did not realize their danger, unfortunately stayed until World War II and even after, and some of them avoided death. Henry and Helen farmed in Midland Township, Gage County, Nebraska. In 1910, Helen told the census takers that she had not had any children who had died. In 1920, the census shows: Henry A. Claassen, 38, head, farmer Helen Claassen, 39, wife Paul Claassen, 12, son Helen Claassen, 10, daughter Anna Claassen, 8, daughter Elizabeth Claassen, 6, daughter A family story is below: Paul was planning to be a missionary to Japan. The summer he died, he was playing hide and seek with his sister in the barn. He hid in the hay loft and jumped into the hay mow right onto an upright pitch fork and bled to death. A very tragic death his mother never got over. (He was my uncle and my mom, Anna always told me this tragic story.)
