He had a history of heart problems. Born in Waverly on February 22, 1918, he was a son of Charles O. and Leafy Minett Swisher. On January 24, 1937, he married Louise Duncan, who survives. Survivors besides the wife include a son, Charles D. Swisher, Mooresville; two daughters, Janet Mackenzie, Mooresville, and Paula Schelm, Monrovia; nine grandchildren; a brother, Charles E. Swisher, and two sisters, Mildred Jarrett and Bernadine Breedlove, all of Mooresville. Swisher was a graduate of Mooresville High School and worked for several years as a sales manager for the Vestal Motor Company in Mooresville. He was a three term state senator, and being a strong advocate of "home rule," he kept in close association with his constituency. He was appointed doorman to the House of Representatives in 1955 and served as clerk in the Indiana Senate in 1959. He was a precinct committeeman in Brown Township 3 for many years. The Chamber of Commerce named him "Mooresvillian of the Year" in 1974. The 10-year veteran of the Indiana Sentae was a director of the Morgan County Bank & Trust and public relations director of the Kendrick Hospital. The Rev. Rex Miller will officiate at the funeral Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Mooresville Friends Church. Interment will be in White Lick Cemetery. Calling hours will be at the Carlisle & Son Funeral Chapel in Mooresville from 7 until 9. "Pete" Swisher was a rarity among men and truly a friend to all. Although physically short of stature, he was big and tall insofar as the sterling quality of men are concerned. Born in Waverly, in early childhood he began to exemplify the qualities of greatness of the man, and sought to put into his everyday living, all of the kindness and consideration for others that only multiplied as the years carried him on. To a teen-age marriage that fell short only nine days of being 42 years, he left to carry on his dreams, two daughters and a son, Janet Mackenzie, Paula Shelm, and Charles "Bud" Swisher. These children gave him nine grandchildren. He was a true and gentle husband who took his stand as head of his home, rearing his children with words of wisdom and guidance in the fear of the Lord. His avocation in life can only be summed up in one phrase—"He loved." He was a friend to all and a servant to everyone. We are certain that Pete Swisher, himself, was never taken into consideration insofar as his thinking went in any task confronting him. Loving life and loving people, he found his dreams to be fulfilled in his service in the health care field, and the government of the people of the state of Indiana. Now in the position of a state senator for his third term, he listened to every constituent with interest and a deep concern, and a will to do something about it. District 37 will reap for years to come the fruits of the labor of this one, senator Swisher. Summing up the life of Pete Swisher, we can always hold a dear memory of a colorful fellow who was happiest in the service of others. He loved a crowd; he loved a parade; he loved and enjoyed the life he lived to the fullest degree. He loved the Lord!
