Pauline was born May 5, 1916, in Ellijay, Ga., a small town nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. She was the youngest daughter of John and Julia Nichols Cook and spent the first 12 years of her life in North Carolina and Georgia. Her family rode the train from Marietta, Ga., and arrived in Fort Benton on the evening of Dec. 9, 1928, when it was 20 below zero. Even after 83 years in Montana, Pauline never lost her southern accent. Pauline attended grade school in Fort Benton as well as the Stranahan School near Montague. She did not finish high school as she was needed at home to take care of her mother. While growing up on the family farm and ranch near Montague, Pauline helped her brothers train horses and was an accomplished horsewoman. In 1943, Pauline married Robert "Bob" Poindexter in Brownville, Texas, where he was waiting to be deployed overseas. At the end of World War II they bought a farm near Montague, where they raised two children, John and Julia. They lived there until 1972 when they retired to Fort Benton, and John took over the family farm. Bob died in 1981. Pauline was a member of the First Christian Church since 1930 and a member of Rebekah's. She loved family history and kept in touch with many relatives across the United States. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, reading and needlework: embroidery, sewing, quilting, and especially crocheting. She also enjoyed gardening and growing flowers and was always on the lookout for pretty rocks. She loved animals and always had pets. Pauline was a caregiver. She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Robert; parents, John and Julia Cook; sister, Merle Cook Dewar; and brothers, Cecil, Rene, Ira, and Oscar Cook. Survivors include her son, John (Darlene) of Geraldine; daughter, Julia Poindexter Bitz of Fort Benton; seven grandchildren, Tracie Poindexter of Helena, Tami Poindexter Martin of Geraldine, Dena Poindexter Salois of Geraldine, Kristy Poindexter of Geraldine, Jillian (Jason) Bitz Baker of Great Falls, Nicholas (Kristin) Bitz of Madison, Wis., and Michael (Angie) Bitz of Taylors, S.C.; and 14 great-grandchildren, David Martin, Julie Martin Sangster (Brent), Charles Martin, Brett Salois, Adam Salois, McKenzie Salois, Rachael Salois, Alexandra Poindexter, Peyton Baker, Porter Baker, Noah Bitz, Kinsey Bitz, Kera Bitz, and Jacob Bitz; and numerous nieces and nephews.
