Highland Recorder January 3, 1941 AGED LADY DIES Mrs Perthena Colaw Simmons was born January 22, 1856, died December 20, 1940, at the age of 84 years, 10 mos. and 28 days. She joined the United Brethren Church in her early childhood and continued as member of that church until her death. Mrs. Simmons was the last member of the Colaw family in which there were nine children. She was married to Mr. Isaac B. Simmons on September 27, 1882 at Strait Creek by Rev. Mr. Horn. To this union five children were born: Mrs. Louvenie Bowers, Mrs Sadie Puffenbarger, Mrs. Florence Harper, Mr. Pearlie Simmons and Mrs. Ollie Rexrode. The latter having preceded her mother to the grave by two years. She is also survived by eleven grand children: Clarence, Howard, Melvin and Anna Margaret Puffenbarger and Mrs. Kenton Rexrode, Glen Harper, Marvin and Lorraine Simmons, Clyde, Jr., Mary Florence and Ivan Rexrode, and also three great grand children: Ivan Puffenbarger, Betty Sue Rexrode and Ornell Puffenbarger. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Eugene Rawleigh of Mt. Solon, pastor of United Brethren church, assisted by Rev. H.E. Skelton, pastor of Highland Methodist Charge. Services were held at eleven o’clock on December 22 at Union Chapel Church. Interment was in the cemetery near by. Highland Recorder August 2, 1946 Part of Virginia Rubush's column Yesterday a friend from the Union Chapel neighborhood showed me her treasure chest. In it were beautiful quilts, the work of many winter evenings. In it too was a scarlet wool skirt edged with wool lace. The lace was crocheted from wool which had been spun on a little flax wheel by Mrs. Puffenbarger’s mother. It told a story of Highland County, and of the industry and cleverness of her women folk. It told a story of learning too, because the lace had been crocheted during the dinner hour at school. I wonder what dye Mrs. Isaac Simmons used to get that beautiful shade of red for the wool lace ?
