Description	:	Note: this memorial updated August 20, 2016. Photos of the Monfort family headstone were first taken and posted in 2009 when this memorial was first entered. Recently (sometime in 2016) the main inscription portion of the this family monument toppled over, with the inscription facing upwards. Due to the location of this monument on a slight embankment, it is most likely that this toppling was due to a shift in the ground under the base, not a result of vandalism. New photos showing the toppled monument and of the inscription taken and posted to this memorial on August 20, 2016. Also to be noted is a correction to the DOB for the wife, Nancy Harbert Monfort. A previous Evergreen cemetery transcription project inadvertently listed the DOB as June 3, 1839. This contributor, on August 20, 2016, re-inspected this inscription and found that the DOB as engraved is actually June 5, 1839, which matches her obituary information. Her memorial is being corrected accordingly. -------------------- Obituary from Fairfield Ledger (Weekly) December 10, 1902 "A Good Man Gone Peter C. Monfort, an excellent citizen and a fromer soldier, died at this home in this city Wednesday evening, after many years of ill health from disease contracted in the army. He was a native of Ohio, born January 14th, 1829. He was married in that state to Hancy (sic. Nancy) Harbert November 4th, 1858, and the wife died in this city January 28, 1899. They were the parents of seven children, four of whom are now living, all in this county - M. Estella, E.A. (&) P.H. Monfort, and Mrs. Hattie L. Pattison. Mr. Monfort was a soldier in the War of the Rebellion. and saw three years' service in Company B, 118 Ohio Infantry. The family came to this city in 1866, and the father was widely known in the community. He was an industrious man, a law abiding citizen, and of the utmost honesty and integrity. The remains were interred in this city Friday. Rev. H.O. Spelman conducting the funeral service. The Odd Fellows had charge of the interment." ----------- From the Fairfield Weekly Journal -- 5 Dec 1902 P. C. Monfort Dead. Last night at 11 o'clock at the home of his son-in-law, W. J. Pattison, occurred the death of P. C. Monfort. Mr. Monfort never had a robust constitution and last night he succumbed to old age and a complication of diseases. He was born in Ohio January 1829, making him 74 years of age next January. When the war broke out he was ready to serve his country and enlisted and endured the hardships of the battle field and camp throughout nearly the whole of the conflict, but he came home with health partly ruined, which he never fully recovered. From Ohio, he moved to Kansas, where he remained but a few years, then he came to Iowa and located on a farm in Cedar township about 1873. In 1890 he sold the farm and moved to Fairfield where he has since resided. Mrs. Monfort died four years ago. There are four children living and two dead. Stella Monfort, Mrs. W. J. Pattison of this city, Ed. H. and Perry Monfort, both of this county. Mr. Monfort was a member of the Congregational Church. He was a quiet unassuming Christian and always attended to his own business, and such a man always wins the confidence and love of the people. The funeral will be conducted tomorrow at 2 o'clock from the house.
