He was married to Anna Erickson, in Sweden, Nov. 1st, 1850, by whom he has had eight children, four boys and four girls, three of whom preceded him to the spirit land. The oldest daughter, Anna Jackson, now lives in New Mexico; one son, Peter E. Skoglund, is in Klondyke; one daughter, Maggie Powell, lives in Douglas, Wyoming, and another, Mrs. O.M. Rice, lives in Casper, Wyoming, and the youngest son, John, still stays near home, occupying the old homestead near Dayton. In August, 1857, with his wife and three children he left his home in Sweden and sailed for America and settled first in Victoria, Illinois. In the spring of 1861 (could be 1864), leaving his family in Illinois, he came to Dayton, and in the summer he hired Charley Newstrand to take his team of oxen and return to Illinois and bring his wife and children to Dayton, which he did without mishap. Mr. Skoglund was always proud of the fact that he got his citizen papers in time to cast his first vote in America for Abraham Lincoln. He bought and improved a two hundred acre farm in Dayton township upon which the family resided until 1885, when he bought property in Dayton and has since that time, with his aged wife resided here. For many years he was a member of the Swedish M.E. church in Dayton, but owing to some trouble with the church and its pastor many years ago he took his name from the books but did not cease to worship with them. He was a man of strong individuality and always exercised his own judgement in all matters. The last act of his life was to attend the election the day before he died, at the time being to all appearance in his usual health, although he had before told some of his friends that he was having some trouble with his heart. During the night he was restless and could not sleep. About five o'clock in the morning he got up and looked at the clock, and then his wife noticed that he was much worse and assisted him back to the lounge. They sent for a doctor but before he could arrive Mr. Skoglund passed peacefully away. His funeral services were held at the Swedish M.E. church on Saturday, Nov. 6, Rev. J.E. Berggren, of Stratford, assisted by Rev. Ostrom, conducting them. A large number of friends were in attendance.
