Read More	Dayton Review March 1, 1934 Obituary John Skoglund, one of the pioneer residents of Dayton and community, was born at Victoria, Illinois, January 12, 1860, and passed away on Tuesday of last week, February 20, 1934, very shortly after a serious operation performed at the Lutheran Hospital in Fort Dodge, at the age of 74 years, 1 month, 8 days. At the age of four years he came overland with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Skoglund, to Dayton, arriving here on Midsummer eve, 1864. He was united in marriage to Miss Augusta Swanson, March 17, 1885. Their marriage was blessed with thirteen children, of whom three preceded their father in death: Benjamin Ray, September 12, 1894; Elsie Irene, July 11, 1907; and Laura Viola, or Mrs. Ed Ringberg, October 12, 1916. Mr. Skoglund and his family resided for many years on his farm six miles southwest of Dayton. Seventeen years ago he retired from active farm work, and moved into town, where his remaining days were spent. As a boy, he was confirmed in the Swedish M.E. Church of Dayton. Since May, 1905, he has been actively connected with the Lutheran Church of Dayton, of which he served as trustee some eighteen years. In this community, he has always taken an active interest in its progress, and has been active among the organizations and movements that have promoted its advancement. He valued his friendships, and was a good neighbor among those with whom he lived, a good husband and father, always helpfully interested in the activities and successes of his loved ones. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Augusta Skoglund; four sons, Elmer Skoglund, Reuben Skoglund, Bert Skoglund, and Ivan Skoglund; and six daughters, Mrs. Emil (Myrtle) Newholm, Mrs. J.A. (Anna) McCoy, Mrs. Harold (Ruby) Johnson, Mrs. Floyd (Martina) Olson, Mrs. Ralph (Olive) Peterson, and Mrs. Ralph (Sadie) Stark. All the children, except Mrs. McCoy of Des Moines live in or around Dayton. He is also survived by twenty-eight grandchildren, one brother, Peter Skoglund of Tonaskett, Washington; and three sisters, Mrs. Maggie Powell of Douglas, Wyoming, Mrs. Kate Campbell of Leo, Wyoming, and Mrs. Anna Jackson of Tularosa, New Mexico. The funeral services were held from the Lutheran Church last Friday afternoon, Rev. Waldo Ekeberg, the pastor, delivering the sermon. There was singing by the male quartet, and by Mrs. C.V. Anderson. Interment was made in Dayton cemetery.
