Soldier in Vietnam Recalls Letter Funeral services have not been completed for George Dwayne Barrett, the Lyon County serviceman who was killed in action Wednesday in Vietnam. The time and place of the services will be announced by Roberts-Blue-Barnett Chapel. Pvt. Barrett, who had been in the Army since Feb. 14th, 1967, and had been stationed in Vietnam since Aug. 18th, 1967, was born June 18th, 1944, in Emporia, and he was graduated from high school in Reading. He is survived by his stepfather and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Alpha Casebier, who own and operate the Hillcrest Rest Home between Miller and Admire; four brothers, Jacob Barrett, of 20 South Cottonwood St.; Dennis Barrett, of 215 East Kansas Ave.; Billy Joe Barrett of Topeka, and Floyd Casebier, who is serving in the Navy, and stationed in Oakland, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Doris) Milam, 17 South Neosho St., and Mrs. Coleen Smith, Wichita, and 13 nieces and nephews. Not long ago an article written by Pvt. Barrett appeared in a column in the Gazette and friends have suggested that the letter be repeated. It follows: "HILL 875" "The empty boots that stand in DAK To side by side, lie on Hill 875, were worn by gallant, courageous men who valiantly fought to stay alive, to win the Hill, and to do their part. The Hill was won, and so many dies that the survivors placed empty boots together on the Hill side by side--when they wept, I too cried. "How can people who live in freedom, who are free to do what they please, seemingly ignore the many empty boots. Humbly and down upon our knees, let us pray for those who died, for the wounded and those living still, who with the help of those no longer living finally took possession of the Hill, and, you -- who burn your draft cards, you -- who riot and rebel, you -- who scorn, belittle and ridicule our part in this war -- heed you well. "Your feet stamp on those who died. Your feet stamp on those who cried and those who lived -- you crucified. You call it your "right to protest," you misuse that "right;" a coward's lie, your odious word and deeds haunt the living and betray the dead, who, for you, did die. "You betray America as a traitor to every man -- your words and deeds laugh at all the empty boots lying forlorn on many a hill in Vietnam. "May God forgive you and may those whose boots are empty today be at peace with God: for those who are alive -- may God be with you every step you take and may He help you to survive. George Dwayne Barrett, the Lyon County serviceman who was killed last week in action in Vietnam, is survived by his father, George Barrett, of Kansas City, and by five uncles and one aunt, all of the Emporia area. Private Barrett's father received official notification of the death from Washington. The uncles and aunt are Vernon Barrett, 207 South State St.; Chester Barrett, 615 Sylvan St.; Fred and Ralph Barrett, Hartford; Wayne Barrett, Council Grove; and Mrs. E. P. Brickley, 315 W.
