Robert Russell Raymond "Rainbow" was born on Aug. 7, 1926 to Casmir and Agnes (Helgerson) Raymond in Geddes, South Dakota. Bob married Mildred (Millie) Tatum on Dec. 16, 1948 in Lake Andes. Bob and Mildred lived in Lake Andes where Bob worked on the Fort Randall Dam. In December of 1950, Bob joined the Army and was stationed at Fort Riley. He served his duty on the USS Barrett and Morris Rose, while stationed in England, until his honorable discharge in December of 1952. Bob returned to his family and continued working on the Fort Randall Dam and Gavins Point Dam. In 1955 Bob and Millie moved their family to Pierre where Bob worked on the construction of the Oahe Dam until its completion. Bob helped build every major dam in South Dakota. After the completion of the Oahe Dam construction, Bob was employed by Joe Thorne, R&W Construction, Case Implement, Ole Olson and the City of Pierre until his retirement. Post retirement, he enjoyed working for Dennis Hanson at the Fort Pierre Livestock Commission. Cowboying and horses have always been a part of his life, from learning to ride as a toddler, to breaking his own horses to ride. All his horses' personalities possessed his same high-spirit. Bob never passed-up an opportunity to get on a horse. He loved being a rodeo pick-up man, an out-rider during the race season, helping a friend work cattle, cattle drives, and Friday's at the sale barn. Younger day events would include chariot races, a horse back visit or two to a public establishment, and just a few amateur rodeo's at Dudley's. Even though he has always made horses a part of his life, Bob had to give up riding a few years ago, but still managed to own a horse with the help of his great friends. He never turned down a chance to lend a helping hand and never met a stranger. Bob has a profound respect for his cowboy family and the utmost respect for the horse. The cowboy way definitely characterizes Rainbow's way of life. Bob's pastimes today include daily phone calls with Joe, Willie, Dave, Gordon and Scotty, providing his political opinions to family and friends, and antagonizing telemarketers. Bob is survived by his wife Mildred of 60 years, sister Valda Kennedy of Reno, Nev., brother Robert Russell Raymond of Wagner, son Dean Raymond (Deb) of Pierre, daughters Debbie Miller (Mike) of Phillip, Monica Harding (Steve) of Pierre and Kay Person of Fort Pierre. Bob and Millie have six children, 18 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, four sisters, two daughters and one son-in-law.
