Email address of contributor: [email protected] Their suggestion: ------------------------- Funeral Tuesday For Two Killed on Crossing FAIRFIELD --- Funeral services for Mrs. Phena May Droz, 402 North South Sixth street, and her four-year old grandson, Larry Eugene, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Droz, killed Saturday afternoon about one o'clock when her car was struck by Burlington eastbound passenger No. 178, will be held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock at the Weston Behner funeral home. The Rev. S. P. Williamson of the First Christian church will be in charge. The burial will be made in the Memorial Lawn cemetery. Mrs. Droz was the former wife of Lawrence Droz, a coal dealer here. She was born May 14, 1901 in Unionville, Mo., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Viles. She had made her home in Fairfield for the past 35 years and during World War II was employed in the Burlington ordnance plant. Surviving are eight children, Willard, Perry, Richard, Clifford, Marshall and Louise, Mrs. Keith Hawk and Mrs. Mary M. Shondel all of Fairfield and three grandchildren. Mrs. Droz had been on a shopping tour Saturday noon and was driving north on Ninth street at what is known as "the Dexter crossing" of the Burlington. According to information given to coroner Jack Raymond, the railway crossing danger signal was in operation and Mrs. Droz came to a stop on the south side of the tracks but it is believed she noticed some freight cars sitting in the signal zone and thought they were causing the danger alarm, so she drove slowly onto the tracks directly in the path of the oncoming passenger train. A clear view of the tracks westward was obstructed by freight cars on a siding north of the Dexter plant, Raymond said. The engine struck the car carrying it more than 200 feet before it settled down on the siding almost opposite the Streator Products Co. loading doors. Mrs. Droz was dead when help reached her but the boy was still alive, dying 15 minutes later as he was being taken into the Jefferson county hospital. According to Coroner Raymond, there will be no inquest. Mrs. Droz car was demolished. Source: Van Buren Co.
