Description	:	Philip Austin Thompson, age 84, died April 22, 2010 at home after a short illness. Philip was born in Mullins, South Carolina, a son of the late Donna Coleman and Frank Austin Thompson. Since 1932, he resided in Conway, attended Conway Public Schools and was graduated from Carlisle Military Academy. He attended Clemson University until entering the United States Army during World War II as a paratrooper serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Read More	Philip Austin Thompson, age 84, died April 22, 2010 at home after a short illness. Philip was born in Mullins, South Carolina, a son of the late Donna Coleman and Frank Austin Thompson. Since 1932, he resided in Conway, attended Conway Public Schools and was graduated from Carlisle Military Academy. He attended Clemson University until entering the United States Army during World War II as a paratrooper serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations. After military service, he attended the University of South Carolina and joined the South Carolina National Guard, retiring with the rank of Major. He founded the Peoples Underwriters Insurance Agency in 1958 and retired in 1990. He served as mayor of the City of Conway from 1975 to 1979. He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Conway, serving in many capacities, and was active in the Conway Jaycees, the Conway Lions Club and other community activities. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Page, his son, P! hil Coleman, and wife, Patricia Nobles and their children, Cole and Ali, his daughter-in-law, Sharon Howell Thompson and her children, Leslie and Austin, and his brother, John C. Thompson, and wife, Barbara. Philip was preceded in death by his son, Frank Austin Thompson, II, and sisters, Carolyn T. Edwards and Sara T. Finlayson. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 11:00 o'clock a.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Conway with Rev. Mac Kinnett officiating. Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery, with visitation at graveside. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the First United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 1001 Fifth Avenue, Conway, S.C. 29526 or Coastal Carolina University, Frank Austin Thompson, II, Endowed Scholarship for Health Promotion, P.O. Box 261954, Conway, S.C. 29528.
