Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Akron, Iowa. Mr. Bay died Wednesday, March 30, 2005, in Scottsdale. He was born July 18, 1934, in Akron, Iowa, the son of Axel and Margaret Bay. He moved to Lawrence in 1965 and to Arizona in 1985. Mr. Bay owned the Jet Lag Restaurant and Lounge in Scottsdale, which he opened in 1986. Survivors include a son, Donald, Phoenix; four daughters, Pamela Bay, Cynthia Butler and Barbara Bay, all of Phoenix, and Katherine Davis, Scottsdale; a brother, Jules Bay, Iowa; a sister, Claire Thuringer, Nebraska; and eight grandchildren. Services were held Wednesday, April 6 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Phoenix. Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 9 in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Akron, with the Rev. LeRoy Seuntjens of St. Mary' Catholic Church, Hawarden officiating. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time Saturday, with a Scriptural wake service at 10:30 a.m. at Carlsen Funeral Home Schroeder Chapel in Akron. Philip L. Bay was born July 18, 1934, in Akron, the son of Axel and Margaret (Gleason) Bay. He attended school in Akron and graduated from Akron High School. Following high school he started his career in finance business. Philip was united in marriage to Rita Wanderscheid, Nov. 28, 1953. At the age of 26 he was the youngest branch manager in the history of Associated Discount Association which had 98 offices at that time. In 1965 he settled in Lawrence, KS with his family. He worked for several real estate offices before opening his own firm, with officers in Lawrence and Topeka. Continuing to grow and prosper, he developed housing subdivisions and became a partner in a Wichita, KS construction company. In 1985 Philip retired and moved to Scottsdale. After 18 months he jumped into the challenge of taking over a space previously occupied by a restaurant and lounge in Scottsdale. He remodeled the old establishment and built the Jet Lag Restaurant and Lounge. In 1991 he built and opened the North Star Restaurant and Lounge in Phoenix. Philip was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Phoenix. He also was a longtime member of the Arizona Licensed Beverage Association, where he was director and chairman of the finance committee. He was instrumental in helping to shape the course of actions acquired to protect liquor licenses against unfair legislation. Survivors include his wife, Rita; a son, Donald; four daughters, Pamela Bay, Cynthia Butler, Katherine Davis and Barbara Bay; eight grandchildren; a brother Jules "Brownie" Bay and his wife, Darlene of Sioux City and a sister, Claire Thuringer of South Sioux City.
