William, the father, is not listed in Hamilton with Charles, Humphrey and William Jr. In 1806 Humphrey, two adult women under 60 (Sarah Madison, his wife, and Agnes, his mother?), three males under sixteen and four females under sixteen are living with him. In 1807, Humphrey and both brothers, Charles and William Jr. and their families are living in Hamilton Township. But in 1812, only Humphrey and his family are still in Hamilton Township. He remains there until sometime in 1817 or 1818 when he moved the family to York. He is listed in an 1819 York directory. He may actually have been Humphrey Philip. The next two generations named sons a combination of those two names. Philip MAY was a cooper and was in the North Shore/Manitoulin Island area for most of his life. If this is the case, then Philip Lemais' son Philip married the daughter of Joseph Giroux & Louise Lecruyer (Deschamps), Amelia GIROUX. When Philip MAY married Amelia Giroux, the French priest wrote in St. Ann's Penetanguishene records that Philip's name was "Lemai." From: "The Migration of Voyageurs From Drummond Island to Penetanguishene in 1828" Lemais, Philip, cooper; his descendants live in Waubaushene and Coldwater. Giroux, Joseph, died at the age of 76 and was buried at Lofontaine. Coming here at the time he did he has seen this gradual development of the country and after many years of faithful labor in building up a home passed quietly away Friday morning at the advanced age of 74 years. Some evidence of the May's early history with the Manitoulin: According to Jabez Waters Sims census of Manitoulin, Philip May resided on Manitoulin in the 1830's Summer of 1838 – buildings were erected at Manitowaning to accommodate…coopers… That fall the buildings were all occupied. [An Outline History of the Manitoulin Island] 8 October 1838 – Captain Thomas G. Anderson, with 33 people, left Coldwater to establish Manitowaning Village. Included in this group was a cooper. [Miss Anderson's account] 28 June 1841 – Marriage of AMELIA GIROUX and PHILIP MAY – [recorded in St. Anne's, Penetanguishene] 1842 – …coopers' shop and barn were erected by the mechanics attached to the establishment.
