Toronto, January 24th – One of the oldest pioneers of Toronto, Mrs. Rebecca Wagner, passed away at her home of her granddaughter, Mrs. L. E. Price, 894 Dovercourt road, Mrs. Wagner was 104 years old. She was the only granddaughter of James Madison, fourth president of the United States. Mrs. Wagner was born at Cobourg, Ont., on February 14th, 1802. Shortly after her father, Humphrey May, moved the family to Little York. Incidents of the war of 1812 were many and interesting that she often told to her most intimate friends. She heard the explosion when the old fort was blown to pieces in 1813. She was present at the hanging of Peter Mathews and Samuel Lount on the commons and to her dying day declared that Lount was innocent. Her husband went through the Crimea, and was on the battlefield the day of the famous charge of the Light Brigade. Her son, Andrew died on the field at Chickamauga fighting for the north in the late civil war.
