Description	:	Born on a farm near Cherry Valley, Illinois, Phoebe Ellen Bell was carried as an infant to a new farm home near Earlville, Iowa. Here she was reared, attending the rural school, "working out" some, and helping at home with the younger children. She was married at the age of nineteen years to Alford Evans Rich on Christmas Eve, (Dec. 24) 1886. After Al passed away in 1916, Phoebe and the boys stayed on the farm with Russell, their oldest son, doing the farming. The family attended meetings of the Plymouth Brethren, whom Al and Phoebe had joined in their early Nebraska days. The Brethren met by rotation in the homes of members. Phoebe accompanied Russel and his wife, Catherine, when they moved further west with their baby son, Kenneth, to a farm near Gothenburg, Nebraska. Here they continued affiliation with the Plymouth Brethren. Phoebe did some housekeeping in the community but in her retirement years lived with Russell and Catherine in the town of Gothenburg. She died there, on March 8, 1953 and was buried in Gothenburg Cemetery. (Bell-Cornwell Family Record - March 1992.)
