Thurman of Indianapolis, Miss Laura Thurman and Mrs. Lillian Branch. Mr. Thurman was born on a farm east of Mooresville, in 1840. After his marriage to Mary E. Purkey, in 1859, they continued to live there until 1874. They moved to Mooresville, which has since been their home. Mr. Thurman was well known in many adjoining counties as an auctioneer of repute. His remarkable voice and unusual size made him easily remembered by all who met him. His weight a short time ago was 380 lbs., but he had weighed as much as 450. Mr. Thurman was also engaged in the live stock business for many years, and his travels in buying and selling stock helped to give him a wide acquaintance throughout the country. He had been a loyal member of the Odd Fellows lodge for forty-one years and was also a Mason. Mr. Thurman was a warm hearted man, exceptionally kind in his family life, jovial and friendly outside, and well liked both as a friend and a neighbor. Services were held at the home Sunday afternoon at 1:30, by Rev. Elmer St. Clair, assisted by Rev. Willis Bond and Rev. L. L. Carpenter of Wabash. Several hundred people gathered in the house and yard, and the homes of three of the neighbors were also thrown open to them as a shelter from the inclement weather. Kreglow's casket wagon was brought down from Indianapolis to convey the body to the cemetery, the hearse not being large enough, and a window had been enlarged in order to remove the casket from the house.
