Read More	Frank Blaine Sloan was born at Geneva, Neb. May 14, 1892. He was uniformly known as Blaine. This rose from the fact that his Uncle Frank, of whom he was always a favorite, lived with Blaine’s parents, and to avoid confusion, the nephew was called Blaine, and the uncle, Frank. Blaine lived at Geneva until called into military service of the United States, May 27, 1918. He attended the Geneva public school, graduating there from in the class of 1911, and then entered the state university, where he attended one and a half years. Afterwards he took a short business course at Washington, D.C., while his parents were living there. From that time, he worked in banks, presided over by his Uncle Frank, at Grafton, Hebron and was engaged in the Geneva State Bank until with a number of Fillmore County boys, he went to Camp Dodge, entering there a company of field artillery. Here his commanding officer suggested he send in his application for entrance into an officer’s training camp, but Blaine, thinking the war would soon be over, preferring over-seas service to camp routine, declined. From Camp Dodge, in the latter part of July, he went to Atlantic, concentration camp for embarkation. On the train the measles broke out in his car. That caused his detention with all those in that car at Camp Mills for about four weeks, although he was immune from the disease. His stay here gave his family opportunity to make him two visits before he entered a casual company. (his regular company having gone on before), embarking on the steamer Lapland, about September 6. He had enjoyed his camp life at Dodge, and while at Mills, although quarantined, he enjoyed the life and associations, and to his parents, brothers and sister, who visited him, he never before had seemed to so enjoy life and exhibit such high spirits. His letters written on shipboard, which reached his parents, uncle and friends reflected robust health and enjoyment. It was his first sea voyage, and the wonders of the deep and its mobile manifestations gave a charm which prompted language and descriptive powers he never had displayed before. Some time before he landed, the prevailing malady seized him, together with many more on shipboard. Upon landing about the 25th of September, he was taken to the Red Cross Military hospital at Liverpool, where his disease took the form of broncho-pneumonia, at the biding of which he yielded his life on October 2, 1918. Blaine was one of those pure-souled young men, who never abused the opportunities that family, means or association had granted them. He stood well with his young companions, while children and older people delighted in his happy, genial, and accommodating way. He never had a bad habit, or indulged a vice. His father said of him: “I never advised him not to use intoxicants or narcotics. It was not necessary. He always tried to follow the course he knew his parents wished him to take, without their entreaty, advice or command.” Never was he denied, nor did he deny himself participation in manly sport or honorable contention, which has done so much to develop the American type of soldiers to whom the world bows in admiration, and history will accord first place among the fighting legions of the world. From Geneva, he went to Camp Dodge; from Camp Dodge to Camp Mills; thence to Liverpool, which seemed to him and friends, that he was going farther, farther from home. He and they knew not that he was on his way to his final home. To him, “To die was landing on some silent shore, Where billows never break nor tempests roar; Ere well he felt the friendly stroke, ‘twas o’er.” Near Liverpool, the world’s great historic seaport, in Everton Cemetery, in the American division, his body lies to rest, laid there by tender hands of the Red Cross, and upon the mound above him memorial wreaths were laid by woman’s hands. Chaplain Conway, a gifted man of God, and a man of war, spoke the final words in his honor. The military honors of his government were accorded him, and his grave marked for that day when his body will be returned to the Necropolis of Geneva, within which all that is mortal of him will lie within view of the home where, with his parents, sister, brothers and friends, he passed so much of his young and happy life. He became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Geneva, June 4, 1908, and was a member when he died. He was a member of the Delta dau Delta fraternity while at the state university. About a year ago, he was made a Master mason in Geneva lodge No. 79, A.F. &A.M. He left his father, Hon. Charles H. Sloan, member of Congress from the Fourth Congressional District, now temporarily at Geneva; his mother, Emma P. Sloan and sister Ethel G., at Washington, D.C., Charles Porter Sloan of Aero Squadron, No. 360 overseas, and William McKinley Sloan, now in the Students Army Training Camp, George Washington University. We hope they may be gathered again at their old home, where, “They will meet, but they will miss him, There will be one vacant chair.” Congressman Sloan and Mrs. Sloan have been accorded the rare privilege and honor of wearing three blue service stars upon their breasts; one of these has turned to gold. The golden star may be worn on many breasts in this fair country of ours, but for none will it be worn more worthily than for Blaine Sloan. The Nebraska Signal November 28th, 1918 page 3. SLOAN, FRANK BLAINE—The following is Confirmation of His death received from the War Department at Washington: Confirmation of the Red Cross account of Frank Blaine Sloan's death was obtained at Washington from the war department Saturday and reached here Sunday night. It was remarkable that the war department took more than a month and a half to discover and communicate the death of a soldier who died at Liverpool in the service. This fact gave his relatives some ground for hope that an error had been made. Blaine was born in Geneva, Mary 14, 1892. He died in the United States service, October 2, 1918. The following is a copy of the letter received by his uncle, Frank W. Sloan, Thursday morning, November 14: American Red Cross, Liverpool Office 35 Dale Street, Oct. 25—Frank W. Sloan, Geneva, Neb., My Dear Mr. Sloan: It is with very deep regret, that I write you regarding the death of your nephew Frank, which occurred on October 2, 1918 at 5 a.m. after transfer from the steamer Lapland to the American Red Cross Military hospital No. 4, Mossley Hill, Liverpool. We are exceedingly sorry to say that he is one of a large number just now who have succumbed to an epidemic. In its first stages it is a peculiar form of influenza, but developes very rapidly into a virulent form of bronocho pneumonia. Not withstanding, all the skill shown by our very efficient medical officers and the constant and unremitting care of the nurses the patients seem to pass away very rapidly. Your nephew was buried in the Everton cemetery, Liverpool on October 7, 1918. There were present at the funeral myself, as representing the Home communication Service of the American Red Cross, and two ladies as representing the local Care Committee of the American Red Cross. A "triumph" wreath, consisting of green cycus leaves, cream chrysanthemums, and maiden hair fern, together with a small stars and stripes flag, was placed on the grave by one of the ladies. The funeral service was conducted by Chaplain Joseph F. Conway, (Untied States Army Chaplain) of Merkison, Wis. Your nephew was accorded full military honors. The number of the grave is 84, section G in the United States division of the cemetery. We feel that it must be very hard for you to have had your nephew die so far way from home under such conditions, but we feel it will always be a comfort to know that he gave his life in a great cause-the right of righteousness and liberty and democracy-and died in the line of duty. It is true that he did not get to the front, but his will was as fine as that of those who actually will meet the Germans, and the example of patriotism he gave will put his name always on the roll of those who gave all for their country. He has certainly given his life in the finest kind of service. We wish to convey to you at this moment of your grief the sincere sympathy of the American Red Cross, and earnestly hope and pray that the God of all comfort and consolation will draw near to you all in this time of your need, and prove a very present help in time of trouble.
