Harold was the 7th Jefferson county, Iowa resident to die or be listed as missing-in-action during World War II, although his death was non-combat related in a airplane crash in Alabama. Three stories about the death notice and funeral remarks were found in the microfilm records of the Fairfield Public library, Fairfield, Iowa. They are trancribed for this memorial to honor Harold's memory and service during WWII. The stories use the word "army" in lowercase; more modern references tend to use "Army". The transcriptions are as verbatim as possible, but any errors are those by this contributor in reading the microfilm copies, which are not always clearly legible: -------- Fairfield Daily Ledger Friday March 19, 1943 Pg. 1 Col. 1 SNIDER 7TH WAR VICTIM OF COUNTY Ferry command flight engineer killed in Alabama plane crash Pvt. Harold Snider, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Snider, 302 South Third street, was fatally injured last night when a U.S. army plane crashed at an undisclosed spot in Alabama. Snider, a flight engineer in the U. S. Ferry Command, was the seventh man from Jefferson county to be listed as dead or missing during the present war. Snider, 24, was inducted into the army at Fort Des Moines with the sixth contingent of selectees from Jefferson county on June 1, 1942. His wife, Mrs. Lucille Snider of Ottumwa was informed of her husband's death this morning in an official message from the war department. Pvt. Snider was born in Jefferson county, December 1, 1918 and graduated from Fairfield High School in 1936. He was employed at the local telegraph office for four years and worked at John Morrell and Company of Ottumwa prior to his induction. In addition to his wife, Snider is survived by a daughter, Patricia, born December 8, 1941. Mrs. Snider is now employed at the Morrell Company. Other survivors include his parents; one brother Carl, sports editor of the Daily Ledger; two sisters Mrs. James Cupp of Fairfield and Diane, at home; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Snider and Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Downard of Fairfield. Funeral arrangements are pending. ------------ Fairfield Daily Ledger Saturday March 20, 1943 Pg. 1 Col. 6 Military Services Planned For Pvt. Harold D. Snider Fairfield flight engineer killed in Alabama plane crash Military funeral services will be held Wednesday for Pvt. Harold Snider, Fairfield flight engineer who was killed in a U.S. Army bomber crash near Centerville (sic. see note above), Alabama Thursday night. The services, first to be held for a Jefferson county soldier who has lost his life in the present conflict (sic. first for which there was a physical body recovered, other services were previously held for those whose remains were not recovered or accounted for), will be held Wednesday p.m. in the Fairfield Methodist church. The body of Pvt. Snider will arrive in Ottumwa early Monday morning and will remain in state at the Johnson Funeral Home in Ottumwa until Wednesday. Assigned to the U. S. Ferry Command only three weeks ago, Snider was on his first flight with that group when the fatal crash occurred. He was inducted into the army at Ft. Des Moines on June 1, 1942 with the sixth contingent of selectees from Jefferson county. He was assigned to service in the Air (sic. next word illegible, possibly Contingent??) Jefferson Barracks and later served as a mechanic at Lincoln Air Base, Lincoln, Neb. and Chanute Field, Rantoul, Ill. He was transferred to Memphis, Tenn. three weeks ago where he received his rating of flight engineer in Ferry Command. Snider's first flight was scheduled for March 8 but was later postponed until Thursday. His plane took off with a formation of army bombers at Memphis, Tenn., but was forced to turn back because of motor trouble east of Birmingham, Alabama. The crash occurred near Centerville and also took the life of Flight Officer H. T. Rockwell. Snider is the seventh service man from Jefferson county to be listed as dead or missing in the service of his country (sic. in World War II, that is). ---------------- Fairfield Ia. Daily Ledger Wednesday March 24, 1943 Pg. 8 Col. 1 & 2 IMPRESSIVE SERVICES FOR PVT. SNIDER Full military funeral held at Methodist church yesterday Many relatives and friends gathered at the First Methodist church yesterday to pay their last respects to Pv. Harold D. Snider, who lost his life in an airplane crash in Alabama last Thursday. The flag-draped casket was placed at the front of the large auditorium in front of the pulpit. It was surrounded by a beautiful display of floral offerings. A large picture of Pvt. Snider was placed on the casket. Soft strains of organ music (sic. played), with Mrs. E. O. Linder at the consol greeted the people at they entered the church. While preaching a fitting and impressive sermon Rev. A. P. Keast pastor of the First Methodist church stated, "Since Harold Snider entered the service before I came to Fairfield, I did not have the privilege of knowing him personally. "To me he is more than an individual. He is a representative of the thousands of others who have, or will have lost their lives during the present conflict. He gave his life while serving his country. If democracy lives all of us owe him and others who give their lives, a debt of undying gratitude. It is by their sacrifice that our way of life will be saved." Rev. Keast called attention to Lincoln's Gettysburg address, stating that it can be applied today, as it did when the great emancipator delivered the address on the Gettysburg battlefield. During the entire services, members of the American Legion acted as Guard of Honor, standing at attention at each end of the casket. Mrs. Joe Hanson and Paul Haney beautifully sang two hymns. The were accompanied by Mrs. Linder at the organ. The Legion members had charge of the services at the grave. They fired the customary three volleys, after which taps were sounded. The flag was removed from the casket and presented to Mrs. Snider by Staff Sgt. Earl A. Haugen, military escort who accompanied the body from Alabama. Pallbearers included Franklin Ricksher, Donald Fugua and Arnold Lundquist, all of whom have medical discharges from the army; Donald Coleson, home on furlough, Staff Sgt. John F. Dougherty, Albia brother-in-law of Pvt. Snider, and Staff Sgt. Haugen. All men were in uniform. St. Sgt. Dougherty is stationed at Camp San Luis Obispo, Calif., while St. Sgt. Jaugen is stationed at Craig Field, Ala. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery.
