Read More	CO M 2 REGT NC INF SP AM War JAMES SIDNEY ROGERS Haywood County Heritage article 745 My father, always called Jim, was born March 9, 1875, at Fines Creek. He was the oldest son of Short Thad and Sally Teague Rogers. His parents had 14 children, 11 of whom lived long and active lives. In the 1890's, times were hard on Fines Creek; so at an early age, Jim drove wagons to the Asheville market loaded with tobacco and other products his neighbors had to sell. He brought back what few store-bought articles they required. During these trips he often camped out beside crystal clear streams, boiling his coffee and frying home-cured bacon. He kept this habit of camping-out when traveling even into his 70's. In 1898 Jim volunteered for the Spanish American War after a misunderstanding with his future wife, Oma Fisher, who never heard from him during his enlistment. Fortunately, it was not a long war. His Co. "M", Second Regiment N.C. Infantry U.S. Volunteers was aboard ship at St. Simon's Island, S.C. waiting to sail to San Juan when the war ended. He was immediately mustered out on November 7 with a cash payment of $74.39. With this small fortune and some quick fence mending, he and Oma were married ten days later. The first year they lived with his grandfather, Hiram Rogers, but he soon felled trees, hewed logs, and built a oneroom house, in 1900, near the Thad Rogers Cemetery. This house a few years ago was still being used for storage. They lived in this log cabin until their two older daughters were born. I was named for my grandparents, John Fisher and Thaddeus Rogers. Together Jim and Oma raised most of the food required, drying and preserving for the winter. The cow was the most important animal but they also raised chickens, ducks, pigs, and cattle. In 1910 my father moved the family to Macon County by wagons. Stories were ofter told of hardships: Breakdowns; children becoming sick; on the climb up Cowee Mountan all passengers had to walk to lighten the load.. Finally, they reached the Franklin/Prentiss area where relatives helped them get settled. Jim bought a small 40-acre farm. He always loved machinery and bought a second-hand tractor threshing machine and binder which he used to cut his neighbors' grain. In the late 1920's with children in school, Jim had the same problems as many others - farming and hiring out could not support us. We moved to Hopewell, VA., where he helped in construction of the plant which later became Allied Chemical. My father always had an acreage on which he raised food for the family and the animals he kept until his declining years. Nobody could cure hams like he could. Mom's butter, milk, and eggs wers eagerly sought by neighbors which gave her some spending money. Jim died in 1954; Oma in 1962. Both are buried in City Point National Cemetery Hopewell, VA.
