He was Mustered Out on 8/30/1865 at Clarksburg, WV. Dean lived in Etna Green, Indiana for many years, working as a butcher. Also served with William Cody (Buffalo Bill) as an Indian scout. He was married 3 times that I am aware of,his last spouse was: Dortha Etta (Warner) Dean. They had no children together, she acted only as step-mother and some of the children called her Aunt Ett. Obituaries: (date unknown) News Mirror; Bourbon, Indiana: ETNA GREEN MAN FOUGHT INDIANS WITH W.F. CODY. WAS SCOUT WITH BUFFALO BILL IN MONTANA, WYOMING, AND DAKOTA AND FOUGHT IN CIVIL WAR. James W. Dean, an Etna Green man, eighty years of age, was in his early day an Indian scout with Buffalo Bill, Col. W.F. Cody of Montana, Wyoming, and Dakota. He fought with General Thomas of the Union army in the Civil war.Prior to the breaking out of the Civil war he was an Indian trailer, protecting early settlers in Montana, Wyoming, and Dakota. During his Indian service he was a member of company K, Seventh U.S. Regulars. He served under Gen. Augur and Gen. Gibbons.Three Years in Service.For three years he was in the Indian service and during a portion of his enlistment W.F. Cody (Buffalo Bill) was the captain of his company. He also was closely associated with William Hickok, better known as Wild Bill.Mr. Dean is exceedingly well preserved and frequently is taken to be not more than 65 years of age. 15 Oct 1931 - (unknown newspaper): DEATH CLAIMS JAMES W. DEAN Was Last Survivor of the Civil War Residing at Etna Green. James William Dean, aged 84, the last surviving Civil War veteran of Etna Green, died at his home there Wednesday noon. He succumbed to an affliction of the heart after being seriously ill for 10 days. He suffered a heart attack while visiting in the home of a granddaughter at Culver. He was removed to his home where his condition remained critical.Only a few weeks ago Mr. Dean, accompanied Ben Carr, a fellow veteran, of Warsaw, journeyed to Des-Moines, Ia., to attend the national encampment of the G.A.R. Mr. Dean had been a resident of Etna Green for many years. He leaves his widow and two sons, Irwin and John, both living in Etna Green. An only daughter passed away several years ago. Several grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from the Christian church of Etna Green. Rev. Elwood Dunn will be in charge. Death was due to complications and followed an illness of only two weeks.The deceased is the last of the old soldiers in Etna township Kosciusko county. Snow" (age 2) in the William and Hannah Dean farm household in Canaan Township, Morrow County, Ohio. In the 1860 U.S. Census, "James Williams," age 12, is again shown with his adoptive parents, William Dean and wife Hannah Wells, on a farm in Lincoln Township of Morrow County, Ohio. "James Dean" married Amanda Miller in May 1870. According to the 1900 U.S. Census, Amanda bore eight children, but only three survived. James and Amanda divorced in October 1900.
