On Wednesday the flag on the municipal flag pole was at half mast and between the hours of two and four in the afternoon all business houses in Loup City were closed in honor of John B. Burrowes, whose funeral was held from the opera house that afternoon. The large building was not near large enough to hold all the people who came from afar to pay their last respects to the soldier hero who had sacrificed his life for his country's cause. John B. Burrowes, son of Mrs. R. D. Hendrickson, was born in Loup City, on November 15, 1892. He graduated from the Loup City high school in 1911 and is the first of the class of 11 to pass on to the great beyond. For several years after completing his school work he acted as advance man and publicity agent for his uncle's theatrical company. At times he assumed a part of the cast of characters in the various plays and was a very capable actor. He was a very likable young man and had many friends. His father died when John was five or six years old; he is survived by his mother, step-father, aged grandmother and other relatives. He enlisted in the army on Jan. 29, 1918--he had previously enlisted in the 7th Nebraska National Guard which was disbanded by the federal government-- and with six other Loup City boys: Ronald F. Rowe, Oscar Bechthold, Charles May, Paul Heisner, Mike Wilson and Earl Hancock, were advanced in the draft at their requests and sent to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. On February 4, 1919 (six-1918), the boys were separated. Bechthold and Heisner were sent to Camp Morse, Texas, Hancock to Camp Meade, Maryland, Burrowes, Rowe, Wilson to Camp Jackson, S. C. After five months training at Camp Jackson, they were sent to Camp Wadsworth, S. C. for six weeks intensive training, from there to Camp Upton, N. Y., from where they departed for France on July 13, 1918, thirteen days being taken in crossing the water. In France they spent some time in different training camps and about October 1 started for the front joining the 27th Div. at Perronne on the Somme front. Here John Burrowes saw about a week of active service when he was taken ill and died in a British hospital on October 17, 1918. His death was reported as being caused by pneumonia but it was the opinion of the doctors that he had been gassed. He was buried at LeTreort (sic), France, close to the Belgian frontier. About two months ago the body was exhumed and shipped to America along with along with several thousand others, arriving in Hoboken, N. J. about July 1, when his mother was notified. The body was accompanied home by Ronald F. Rowe who had gone to Hoboken to receive it. On the journey home Mr. Rowe reports that the train was met by comrades at several points, who came to the train to pay their last respects to their comrade who had made the supreme sacrifice. The body arrived in Loup City Monday evening and a large number of the American Legion, members of the Odd Fellow and Rebekah lodges and others escorted the body to the home of the mother where it remained in state until Wednesday afternoon. Rev. L. V. Slocumb, of Chappell, Nebr., preached the funeral sermon delivering a splendid oration full of patriotism and with words of comfort and cheer to the bereaved relatives. Interment was made at Evergreen cemetery and after the flag covered casket was lowered into the grave the firing squad and taps concluded the ceremony. It was a regular military funeral in charge of the American Legion, Burrowes Post No. 48, in whose honor it had been named. Music was furnished at the opera house and at the cemetery by the Loup City band and the singing by a special chorus. Great banks of flowers were on every hand and nearly everyone who attended the services at the opera house attended the service at the grave. Mr. Burrowes was a member of Co.
