These were the dying words of Joseph N. Smith on the battlefield of France where he fell mortally wounded. These words were spoken to his chum whom he had been with since he enlisted, and who stood close to him when he fell. He was shot thru the abdomen by a machine gun, and knowing that he could not live, he wanted the folks at home to know that he died like a hero on the battlefield and moreover, that he had shot to kill. This information the writer has from the lips of him who saw him fall and at once went to his side and placed his head on his knapsack and gave him a drink of water. Says my informant: "This is the last I saw of poor Newt,' as a few moments later I was shell shocked and in a hospital for several weeks. Newton Smith knew not what fear meant: he feared neither God, man or the devil, and was one of the best boys I ever met. I learned afterwards that he lived only an hour or so and was buried where he fell." Newton Smith was a Thornton boy born in Woodstock, parents, Joseph Henry and Mandana (Dearborn) Smith. He has a Gold Star on the service flag in Thornton church, also in Plymouth where his mother now lives, and a star on the service flag in the church at Woodstock. The returned soldier who gave me this information is a son of E.E. Mullen of Lincoln, who has just come from the scenes of war. Woodstock Historian. The Plymouth Record, February 8, 1919. Private Joseph Newton Smith, Co. C, 103rd Infantry, A.E.F, France, was killed in action July 20th. Official notification was received Saturday by his mother. The students of the school were grieved to learn of the death of Joseph Newton Smith, a former student of Plymouth High School. His mother has the sympathy of the whole school.
