MILTON LEWIS GIVEN MILITARY BURIAL Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon for Milton O. Lewis, Fairfield boy, who lost his life in France in defense of our country, on August 5, 1918. The services were in charge of Lewis-Trobough Post American Legion, and nearly 100 ex-service men were present to pay their last respect and honors to their departed comrade. Services were held at the Fairfield cemetery (sic) at four o'clock, following the arrival of the American Legion from Edgar, where the funeral of Leslie Northrup was held at one o'clock. Rev. W.A. Alcorn of Arcadia, former pastor of the Fairfield Congregational church (sic), delivered the funeral sermon in presence of more than 1000 relatives and friends and was assisted by Rev. A. R. Jones of the local church. The beautiful burial service of the American Legion was held at the grave. Ex-service men were present from Edgar, Clay Center, Sutton, Dweese (sic), Springranch and other towns, and Commander Wheeler desires to thank the men for their loyal actions towards a departed comrade. Milton oh. Lewis, son of W. A. Lewis, was born in Nuckolls county, Nebraska, January 6th, 1887, and early in life moved with his parents to a farm near Fairfield, later moving to Fairfield. In May, 1917, he enlisted in Co. G 14th Infantry A.E.F., being the second Fairfield boy to enlist in the service of his country. He was immediately sent to France and served his country faithfully until the end. Many beautiful floral offerings were received from loving friends as "Milt" was a favorite with all. The Knights of Pythias Modern Woodmen lodges of which the deceased was a member, were present at the service in a body. - Fairfield Auxiliary. Thus passes the last services for our boys who lost their lives in France, and thus have a sorrowing people paid their last respects in a public manner to two of our own boys who said; "Here I am, take me; that the world may be at peace." Deceased was a nephew of Mrs. Parrish of Nelson. She went up to attend the funeral services.
