His death was due to liver trouble. Mr. Falconer had lived in Dodge county since the spring of 1872, when he settled on a farm in Nickerson township. He was one of the very few early Dodge county settlers who always retained to the time to their death their original homesteams in this part of the country. Mr. Falconer was born in Belmont county, Ohio, January 12, 1841. He resided in Ohio until 10 years of age, when his family moved to Appanoose county, Iowa, where they engaged in farming. When the civil war broke out Reuben felt that the duty to his country called him to join the ranks of her defenders and accordingly enlisted in Co,pany I, Thirty-Sixth Iowa Infantry. He was mustered into service at Keokuk, Ia. His life in the army was strenuous even for thos strenuous times and few were the horrors of war through which he did not pass. From Keokuk he was sent with his regiment to St. Louis and from there to Memphis. As a member of the Seventh Army Corps under General Steel, he fought in the Battle of Helena in 1863. From there he went to Fort Pemberton, then back to Helena, thence to Little Rock, Ark., where he engaged in the battle of that name. While on the march to with his regiment to meet Banks he was captured by the confederates and lodged in prison at Tyler, Tex. There he remained for 300 days, receiving as his rations a pint of cornmeal and one-fourth of a pound of meat every twenty-four hours. His physical condition after he was exchanged was found to be such that he unfit for service, and he was given a month's furlough. When his time expired, he rejoined his regiment at Duvalls Bluffs, Arkansas. After three years service, he drifted back to Iowa where he purchased a farm and lived until his removal to Nebraska. One year after settling on his farm in Nickerson township, he was married to Maria E. Humphreys. The wedding took place on March 4, 1873. Eight children were born of this union, all, together with his wife, surviving the deceased, except Ruth, who died last spring at St. Joseph, Mo. The other children are: Ernest, Cut Meat, S.D.; Mrs. Lulu Boschoult, Pierce; George, Fremont; Etta Falconer, Fremont; Mrs. Ruby Unkel, Nickerson; Thayer, Nicietdon; and Blanche, Fremont. The "History of the Elkhorn Valley" says of him: "In tracing our subject from his birthplace in the Buckeye state, through his checkered and eventful life, one will observe that his life has been one of great toil and no little exposure and hardships. We trace him through his army career and think of him in the army pen at Tyler, Tex., beneath the burning southern sun, enduring those terrible privations for the sake of his country, which combined with his life of uprightness since he has been a resident of Dodge county, leads the historian to say that his has been a true life." Mr. Falconer was a member of McPherson Post No. 4. The funeral has been set for Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and will be held from the Christian church, Rev. Fuller officiating. Mr. Falconer was an old and highly respected citizen who had lived in Dodge county since 1872, when he settled in Nickerson Township. He was born in Belmont county, O., January 12, 1841. He came with his parents to Appanoose county, Ia., when he was about 10 years of age, where he remained till the Civil War broke out, when he enlisted at Keokuk in Company I, Thirty-Sixth Iowa Infantry. His service in the Army was interesting and valuable. He was sent from keokuk to St. Louis and thence to Memphis, where he was placed in the Seventh corps under General Steel. He was at the Battle of Helena in 1863 and went from there to Fort Pemberton, back to Helena and from Helena back to Little Rock, Ark., where he was engaged in the battle of that name. On a march from there to meet General Banks, he was captured and lodged in prison at Tyler, Tex., where he remained for nearly a year before he was exchanged. At the prison Mr. Falconer went through many hardships. The rations were a pint of cornmeal and a fourth pound of meat every twenty- four hours. An examination after his parole showed him unfit for service and he was given a furlough, after which he rejoined his regiment at Duvalls Bluffs, Ark. He had three years service in the war, then returned to Iowa, where he farmed until he came to Nebraska. Mr. Falconer bot 240 acres of land near Nickerson, on which he resided til the time of his death, and added to it from time to time till he had aquired a half section. He was married March 4, 1873, to Mary A. Humphreys, who with seven children survive him, the children being; Ernest, Cut Meat, S.D., Mrs. Lulu Boschoult, Pierce, George, Fremont, Etta Falconer, Fremont, Mrs. Ruby Unkel, Nickerson, Thayer, Nicietdon, and Blanche, Fremont. Another daughter, Ruth, died last spring at St. Joseph, Mo. He was a member of McPherson Post, No. 4, G.A.R., in Fremont. Mr. Falconer was brot to the Fremont Hospital less than a fortnight ago.
