Monroe and Dorothy Morris Monroe and departed this life on April 6, 2003. He was known to his family as "Bubbie". He graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1942. Dean worked in the shipyards in Bremerton before entering the United Sates Army, serving his country as a Staff Sergeant in the Philippine Islands during World War II. Dean married June Dorrel on February 14, 1947. Dean was a successful orchardist in the area and served the community and the Apple Industry throughout his life. He was an active member on the Tree Top Board of Directors, Washington State Apple Commission, Bridgeport School Director, Masonic Lodge, and American Legion. Hobbies and art were a significant part of his leisure time. Dean loved Western art, photography, oil painting, silver smithing, creating jewelry, stained glass and rock hunting. After retiring from the orchard business in 1982, Dean enjoyed landscaping and gardening and growing some of the most beautiful begonias and dahlias in the area. Those who knew and loved Dean were well aware of his wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed him daily at his coffee breaks at the Steakhouse. Laughter played a big role in his life and he always brought a smile to the faces of those around him. He always had a joke to tell and a story to share. He was a generous and caring man. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, June; his children, Kathy and Frank Kennedy, LauraLee Monroe-Jorgensen, and Peggy Smith; six grandchildren, Melissa Kennedy, Marc Kennedy, Carla Kennedy, James and her husband Jonathan, A.J. Jorgensen, Shawni Smith and Matthew Smith; six brothers and sisters, including his twin sister, Jean (Ben) Sloan, Roberta (Fred) Griffith, JoAnn (Paul) Olson, Warren (Betty Jo) Monroe Don (Billie) Monroe and John (Lyne) Monroe; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held in Barnes Funeral Chapel, Brewster, Washington on Thursday, April 10, 2003 at 10:00 a.m.. Interment will follow at the Bridgeport Cemetery with Military Rites by Bridgeport American Legion Post #218. Visitation is Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dean's name to the Bridgeport Ambulance Fund. Services under the direction of Barnes Chapel, Brewster.
