Albert Jensen born in Iowa ----------- RASMUS JENSEN DIED SATURDAY Another Pioneer Citizen Of This Community Called To His Eternal Reward Saturday; Funeral Held Tuesday Rasmus Jensen, one of the pioneer citizens of this community and city, passed away at his home in Graettinger Saturday, Feb 28. He had been ailing for several months and gradually grew weaker until the end. The cause of his ailments was indecent to old age. For the past few months he was unable to leave his bedside and the members of his family realized that nothing could be done to benefit him. Last week he commenced to get weaker and on Saturday he passed away. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon. Services were conducted at the residence at one o'clock, Rev. H. P. K. Hansen, pastor of the Danish Lutheran Church of South Walnut township officiating. From the residence the funeral possession wended its way to the South Walnut church and at the conclusion of the last sad rites at that place the remains of the pioneer settler were interred in their final resting place in the South Walnut cemetery. Many relatives and scores of friends, many who had been intimate acquaintances of the deceased for half a century, were in attendance at the funeral. The pallbearers were Wm. Nelsen, S. P. Duhn, Chris Knutsen, Chris Henningsen, Jens P. Christiansen and Hans Duus. Rasmus was born in Vensyssil, Denmark, Oct. 20, 1838. He was 81 years of age last October. He was united in marriage in his native land to Miss Kristine Petersen, June 24, 1869. Mr. and Mrs. Jensen, came to America in 1875 and located on a homestead in Emmetsburg Township. Sometime later they purchased a fine farm in Lost Island Township where they resided until 1912 when they moved to Graettinger to spend their declining years. Mr. and Mrs. Jensen were the parents of nine children, six of whom are living. They are Chris R., James, Peter and Albert and Mrs. John (Christena) Hansen and Mrs. James (Minnie) Jacobson. Besides the children mentioned the deceased is also survived by his wife. Last June Mr. and Mrs. Jensen had been married fifty years and their golden wedding jubilee was fittingly celebrated by the members of the family. With the passing of Mr. Jensen another of Palo Alto County's pioneer citizens has been called to his eternal reward. Last week we chronicled the death of Mr. Sandvig who for nearly a third of a century has been one of the activity citizens of our community. This week we are called upon to pen the life of history of another worthy citizen who devoted nearly a half a century of the better part of his life in the upbuilding and development of the land of his adoption, who contributed materially and in other ways in the progressive march of our community, our county, and our state. Everything stated in last week's Times in regards to Mr. Sandvig could be applied equally as well to Mr. Jensen. He came to our community from far away Denmark in 1875 -- forty-five years ago and settled on a homestead in Emmetsburg township. Those were the days when the conveniences of the present time was unknown, when the head of the family had to strive hard to secure food and shelter for members of his household, when it was necessary to labor long and hard and earnestly to obtain success and to gradually develop the country until it reached its present perfection. Mr. Jensen was brave of heart and he weather trials and succeeded. A few years ago he retired from the farm in order that he and his faithful wife might spend their remaining years in peace and comfort. The deceased was not only a progressive and worthy citizen but he as a kind and devoted husband and father. His every thought throughout life was for the welfare, the happiness and the comfort of those who were near and dear to him. He raised a family of sons and daughters who are worthy members of our community and they showed by their solicitude and thoughtfulness for their aged father in his declining days that they had profited by the worthy example he set for them, and that his teachings, his admonitions and fatherly advice had not been given in vain. To the sorrowing wife and sons and daughters the Times extends sincere sympathy in this, their hour of sorrow.
