He was just three days shy of being 94. Ray was born to Plush and Ed Glessner on October 25, 1917, at Mansfield, WA. His early years were shaped by his school-teacher mother in the little country schools at Mud Springs and Willow Springs. Sunday School was held at the Oak Grove country school. Ray graduated as Valedictorian from Withrow High School in 1933, at the age of 15. After graduating, he worked on the farm in the Mansfield/Chelan area. At the age of 20, he left the farm to attend Warner Pacific College, receiving his ordination in 1944. While he was working in an apple orchard, Ray met Pauline Collins. "The first time I saw my wife, she was on a thinning crew," he said. "As far as I was concerned, it was love at first sight." They were married on June 30, 1944. To this union were born Camille (Glessner) Riggan, Cassandra (Glessner) Bessire and Carla (Glessner) Boyd. Ray and Pauline have seven grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. In 1947, Ray was working for the Wenatchee Beebe Orchard Company in Manson, and ministering part time at a church in Mansfield, when he and Pauline decided to visit the Log Church in Brewster. There were ten people in the congregation that Sunday. As there had been no pastor for some time, they offered the pulpit to Pastor Glessner. It turned out to be a good decision for the church and for Ray and Pauline. He was the pastor there for 35 years. Glessner held a variety of jobs during those years-marrying, burying and preaching, as well as driving a school bus, working as a carpenter and an orchardist. He was an active member of the community. Ray really cared about the development of the town of Brewster and was part of Kiwanis, the Chamber of Commerce and other groups for the betterment of the town. Family, friends and faithful ones will remember Ray for his witness of Jesus, his Savior. He was always eager to give his testimony to those who did, and didn't, ask him. Should he meet you on the street or wherever-with an arm around the shoulder or a clasp of hands, he would say, "Are you a believer?," or, "Do you know the Lord?" When he would leave you, he would say, "God forbid I should sin against Him in failing to pray for you." Many were blessed when he would say, "May the Lord Bless you and keep you, the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be tender and gracious unto to you. The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace." (Numbers 6:24-26) Ray was a noble man-honorable in all his dealings. Ray did not take. He gave. He was fervent in his stand of truth and honesty. He knew forgiveness is as beautiful to those asking for it, as well as for those granting it. Many people in the Brewster area still refer to Ray as, "Pastor." Preceding him in death were his mother and father, Plush and Ed Glessner; and seven brothers and sisters. One surviving brother, Paul Glessner, resides in Spokane. A Funeral Service will take place Saturday, October 29, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. at Pateros Community Church, with Pastors Phil Smith and Roger Hornbeck officiating. Committal Service will take place Monday, October 31, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at Riverview Cemetery, Chelan. Visitation will be Thursday, October 27, 2011, and Friday, October 28, 2011, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Barnes Chapel, Brewster. Memorials may be made to Conconully Bible Camp, P.O. Box 1312, Omak, WA 98841 or Teen Challenge, 2400 N. Craig, Spokane, WA 99224. Services have been entrusted to Barnes Chapel, Brewster.
