Description	:	Raymond Antone Stremel, born in Bison, Kansas in 1911, died Jan. 11 2017 at the age of 105. He came from Volga German stock, agricultural people who emigrated to the American Great Plains in the 1890's and became wheat farmers in Kansas where Raymond grew up with his 4 sisters and 3 brothers. Raymond had no taste for farming and went to Kansas State College in Manhattan where he graduated as an electrical engineer. He met his future wife, Mary A. Fairman in Manhattan and they were married in 1935. They celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary in 2015. Raymond had no taste for farming and went to Kansas State College in Manhattan where he graduated as an electrical engineer. He met his future wife, Mary A. Fairman in Manhattan and they were married in 1935. They celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary in 2015. After their marriage, Raymond and Mary went west to California where he worked as chief electrical engineer on projects throughout North and South America. One of his first jobs was to electrify the Herman Mine near Auburn. He later worked on electrical projects in such locations as Nome, Alaska, Lake Titicaca in Peru, and for Yuba Manufacturing on their gold dredges in Hammonton, California near Marysville. During WWII, Raymond was instrumental in changing Yuba Manufacturing's Placer Dredge factory in Benicia into producing 155 mm Howitzers, enabling the factory to produce thousands in short order as vital support to the nation's war effort. Mary and Raymond moved to the Concord/Walnut Creek area during the war where they later raised their 4 children, Pamela, John, Paul and Rosemary (Molly). He developed a love of flying, bought his own plane and used to fly to his different work sites. He never lost his yearn to pilot and continued flying well into his 80's. As his children were growing up, Raymond started his own electrical engineering consulting company. He was an inventor and never stopped thinking of new ideas and finding solutions to problems of all types. Long before they became mainstream, he was a tireless promoter of electric cars and electricity-generating windmills, designing and eventually building a highly advanced 25 kilowatt wind turbine for a client in Kansas.
