Description	:	A son of the late Claude W. and Mabel Whitney Conger, Raymond married Bernice Sweet on July 1, 1926. He graduated from Riceville High School in 1922. He received his bachelor of science degree in animal husbandry in 1927 and his master's degree in physiology in 1929, both from Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa, and did graduate work at Teachers College, Columbia University, from 1929 to 1931. Read More	A son of the late Claude W. and Mabel Whitney Conger, Raymond married Bernice Sweet on July 1, 1926. He graduated from Riceville High School in 1922. He received his bachelor of science degree in animal husbandry in 1927 and his master's degree in physiology in 1929, both from Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa, and did graduate work at Teachers College, Columbia University, from 1929 to 1931. While at Iowa State, he was a member of the cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams. He won championship honors and broke records at the Big Ten, Missouri Valley, NCAA and AAU Championships. In 1927, he ran on the two-mile medley and distance medley relay teams that broke world records. He also set a mile record at the NCAA Championships. From 1927 to 1932, wearing the colors of the Illinois Athletic Club, Mr. Conger competed in many American cities and in Europe. He won a spot on the Olympic team by winning the tryouts in Boston on July 4, 1928. His 1500 meter time of three minutes and 55 seconds was an American record. Although he did not win a medal at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, he defeated the gold medalist, Paavo Nurmi of Finland, in the Millrose Games at New York City's Madison Square Garden six months later. He was named to the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame. Mr. Conger was an instructor of zoology from 1931 to 1936 at Carleton College, Northfield, Minn., and also served as track coach. He came to Penn State in 1936, and was a professor of physical education until his retirement in 1970. He served as chairman of the State College Recreation Board from 1947 to 1957, and on the Senate Academic Standards Committee at Penn State from 1956 to 1959.
