Read More	Raymond Paul Hall, 94, of rural Burbank passed away, comfortably, at the Vermillion Care Center following a stroke 2 days earlier and months of social isolation necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Family was with him in his final hours. A lifetime farmer, Raymond was born to Ellwood and Alma Hall on a farm south of Jefferson. He was the fifth of 7 children. When he was 6, the family moved to their permanent homestead between Jefferson and Elk Point. He and his 5 brothers quickly learned the value of hard work as among other chores, they farmed with mules and milked cows by hand. In time, they were delighted to finally secure an old tractor, but soon discovered its unreliability and the need to hitch the mules to pull it in order to get it started. Boys will be boys and despite the labor intense farm work and the hard economic time of the Great Depression, there was plenty of mischievous activity on the homestead. The combination of work and play, family and faith in God, shaped Raymond's character and the mischief continued throughout life. Raymond attended a country one room schoolhouse through the 8th grade and then went to Elk Point High School. He graduated in 1944, during WWII, and was drafted into the Army in 1945. After completing infantry basic training in Louisiana, he served as a warehouse foreman with the 3119 Signal Service Battalion in New Caledonia, Pacific Theater, until November 1946 when he was honorably discharged and returned to the farm. Although he had no further formal affiliation with the Army, he was privileged to go on an Honor Flight in November 2009 and spend time with his brother, Russell, and other military brothers while viewing the WWII memorial In Washington DC. Raymond started his dairy business shortly after his return from the Army and was again milking cows, by hand, twice a day until 1947 when he was able to purchase a milking machine. In a few years, he was able to get a refrigerated bulk milk tank, making the operation so much easier and efficient. At one time, the entire cattle herd was Registered Holstein and the dairy was part of the Dairy Herd Improvement Association that set the standard for the dairy industry. He was a member of both state and national Holstein Associations. In 1949, Raymond married Mary Fitzgibbons and he built them a small home on his parent's homestead. They moved there in 1950 and lived in that small house, without a bathroom, but with an ever expanding family until 1962. They had 8 children when the main larger farmhouse, with plumbing, was vacated and they moved in, adding 2 more children in the next 5 years. Life was hectic, but no matter how busy, they never missed Sunday Mass at St. Peter's in Jefferson and lived their faith the rest of the week, too. The family purchased a farm near Burbank in 1959 and after extensive construction and improvements, moved to the property in 1967. They eagerly joined the Burbank/Vermillion community and St. Agnes Church. Neighbors and new neighbors throughout the years were like family and whenever anyone new moved in, Raymond was there to welcome them. He never met a stranger and socializing was his true hobby. He had a goofy joke for everyone. Although busy with family activities, as well as farming, Raymond and Mary joined a ballroom dancing club in the 70's and made more friends in the community. Friendships that continued long after the club disbanded. Over the years, Raymond served, at times, on the Township Board and the Parish council at St. Agnes. He worked closely with Monsignor Mahowald and other building committee members to get the new St. Agnes church built and open in the early 1980's. He also served on the cemetery committee and with Mary, spent countless hours mapping all cemetery plots at the Catholic cemeteries. Among his accomplishments, the Hall family was selected as Clay-Union Farm Family of the Year in 1971. Later, Raymond was first place winner in the 1994 National Corn Growers Association corn yield contest. ,For several years, Raymond participated in the Field to Table Program and partnered with Valley Ag in Gayville to give school children the opportunity to visit a working farm and gain an understanding about what's on their dinner plates each day and what it takes to get it there. He not only provided the farm, but contributed through hands on demonstrations and presentations. Raymond didn't actively farm after 2017 and moved to Vermillion in 2019, however, he maintained his farm and remained interested in all things farming. He especially enjoyed visiting with farmers and reading farm magazines. Raymond's greatest joy was his family. He was totally devoted to Mary until her death in 2018. Their 68 year union is a great accomplishment by any standard. With the humor Ray enjoyed so much, many of his friends, when speaking to him about her, simply referred to her as "Saint Mary" for putting up with him. Raymond was proud of his children and grandchildren. The loss of 3 children and a son in law was nearly too much, but never failing, his faith and family pulled him through. He is survived and sorely missed by his children: Rosemary (Gerald) Evans Vermillion; Larry (Susan) Sioux City; Diane (Darcy) Steen Lodi, CA; Julie (Jerome) Janssen Madison, SD; Janet (Brian) Mount Meckling, SD: Eileen (Jeff) Senst Aberdeen; Tom and friend Pam of Burbank, SD. 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Russell (Midge) of Elk Point, SD. The funeral service is Wednesday, December 9 at 2 p.m. at St. Agnes church. Attendance at the service will be limited to mostly family, but if you were a close friend of Raymond's you are welcome to attend. Masks are required. The burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Bluff View, Vermillion following the funeral mass with military honors conducted by V.F.W.
