Raymond Richard Morlan was born May 7, 1932 at his home in Pollock, Missouri to Roy Bennett and Ethel Leota (Altiser) Morlan. He graduated from Milan High School, Class of 1950, in Milan, Missouri. He attended Wesleyan University in Illinois. He served in the Navy as a PO Third Class Seamen and Firefighter, stationed in Guam, Marianas Island and Vallejo, California from 1951-1953. Ray was a 50+ American Legion member, Legion Commander- 4 years, Hubbard American Legion Post #4, Hubbard, Iowa. He was baptized and a member at the Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard, Iowa. Ray was united in marriage to Gladys Joyce Morlan, February 21, 1952, Marshalltown, Iowa. He owned and operated the Morlan's Mobil gas station in the early 50's in Marshalltown, Iowa. Later owned Big Ten Feed Company located in Eldora, Iowa. In 1962, Ray built the business moved it to a new plant location on Highway 65 in Hubbard. He later sold the business to Farm Service and served as plant manager until 1969. Ray, then, returned to Eldora during the early 70's operating Heinold Commodities and was a day trader for the Chicago Mercantile Board of Trade. In 1977, the family moved to Homestead, Florida, Ray served as general manager of Atlantic Chemical and Fertilizer. Then later returned to their Hubbard home where he operated FGL Commodities in Eldora until hi retirement in 1994. Ray enjoyed the simple things in life, gardening, reading, bird-watching, hunting mushrooms, spending time in the outdoors on a warm sunshiny day, watching his grandchildren in all their activities. He had a remarkable sweet tooth for homemade baked goods and candy. Ray was an avid Kansas City Chief fan and during his retirement years he and his family shared many great times in the winter, in Florida. During his retirement years, he enjoyed watching his great niece "Golden Girl, Shawn Johnson" reach her dreams. He took pride in viewing all her TV appearances and following her in the media. On July 6, 2009, Ray passed away at Mary Greeley Medical Center, in Ames after a difficult road and fight with cancer. It was a long and courageous battle he fought with a lot of dignity. He is survived by his wife Gladys Joyce Morlan of Eldora, Iowa; four children, daughter Deb Crosser (Curt) of Eldora, Iowa, son Tracy Morlan (Sondra) of Eldora, Iowa, son Scott Morlan (Nina) of Hubbard, Iowa and daughter Kelly Mosch (Mike) of New Providence, Iowa; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; along with sisters Virginia Worsfold, Marshalltown, Iowa, Ruby Hartke, Des Moines, Iowa, Margaret Smith, Pollock, Missouri, Olive Saner, Unionville, Missouri and brothers Fred Morlan, Kirksville, Missouri, and Don Morlan (Anita), Columbus, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Ethel Morlan, infant brother Wayne Morlan, brother James Morlan, sisters Thelma Higgason and Loretta McPherson. Ray was a well respected agricultural businessman in Hardin County for many years. His knowledge and expertise of farming, livestock, feedstock and the agri markets contributed to the areas community vitality for many years. His entrepreneurial spirit will be longed remembered and admired. He was a loving, devoted and tenderhearted husband, brother, father, grandfather and great grandfather with a heart of gold.. Family and friends were all so important. He enjoyed all the special times he shared with each and everyone often reminiscing about all their special memories. He will be deeply missed by many, including his special and loving dog, "Sophie". Memorial contributions may be sent to the Pollock Community Center and Pollock Cemetery, Polluck, MO. Visitation: The family will receive friends at Boeke Funeral Home in Hubbard, Thursday, July 9, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Service: Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 10, 2009 at 2:00 pm at First Congregational UCC in Eldora, IA. Cemetery: Raymond will be buried at Eastlawn Memory Gardens in Eldora, IA.
