It was known that he was very ill and that his parents had gone to Lincoln to be at his bedside, but we did not realize how serious his illness was until his death was announced to our startling hearing. Raymond Stephen Sweetland was born on a farm 6 miles south of Loup City June 18, 1898, and died at Lincoln, Nebraska, December 19, 1918, aged 20 years, 6 months and 1 day. He moved to Loup City with his parents in December, 1901,and grew to manhood in this community. He graduated from the Loup City high school with the class of 1916. During his senior year he worked in the post office, after his graduation began work at the jeweler's trade with Henry M. Elsner, intending to fit himself for that work. Hw was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, uniting with that church on April 30, 1916. When the United States entered the war Ray was among the first to leave Loup City to enlist, but was unable to pass the physical examination. He tied twice more to get into the service of his country but was unsuccessful. When the Loup City Home Guards were organized he became a member of that organization, and later when the government established the S. A. T. C. he enlisted as soon as he was permitted to volunteer. He was mustered into the service October 17, 1918 and at the time of his death was a Corporal in Company D, of the S. A. T. C. of the University of Nebraska. He was taken to the hospital on December 12, with a severe case of pneumonia. His parents learning of his critical condition went to Lincoln and were with him from 3 o'clock Wednesday until he passed away at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. He suffered intense pain but he died bravely, and with a smile just as he had lived, and his last thoughts were for others and not for himself. "He wanted so much to serve his country and gave his life for that privilege." Ray is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. N. Sweetland; two brothers, Clarence, of Loup City and Leslie, of Rigby, Idaho, and one sister, Frances, Mrs. D. C. Primrose of Rockford, Illinois, and other relatives and numerous friends who deeply grieve over his early death. Two brothers preceded him to the heavenly home, Everett, who died in 1895 and a baby brother who died in 1901. The remains were brought to Loup City and funeral services were held from the late home on Monday, interment being made in Evergreen cemetery, Rev. L. V. Slocumb conducted the services, Ray's S. A. T. C. comrades acting as pall bearers, members of the Home Guards in uniform attended the obsequies. "Taps" was sounded at the cemetery at the closing of the service.
