Regina "Jean" was born Sept. 8, 1921, in Loup City, Neb., the daughter of John and Bridget Kosmicki Palu. In 1936 the Palu family moved to a farm northwest of Grant, Neb. As a young woman Jean worked various jobs. She did housework and was a waitress in Ogallala, was a nurse's aid in Sutherland, and she helped farm wives during corn harvest. In 1941 Jean met Fred Spahn on a blind date. After Fred enlisted in the Navy they were married on Oct. 9, 1942 at the courthouse in Ogallala. While Fred served on a ship Regina moved to Norfolk, Va., to be close to Fred's home port. She worked at a defense plant as a 'Rosie the Riveter.' In 1945 after Fred was discharged from the Navy, Fred and Jean moved to Big Springs, Neb. They opened Spahn Body Shop in January 1946. In 1948 they purchased property and built a Quonset on Pine Street where they moved the business in March, shortly before the 1949 blizzard. The family lived in a rented house south of Big Springs until they purchased a two-room house from William Buss in May 1946. As the family grew the house was enlarged. After the children were in school Jean began doing upholstery work and later became the bookkeeper of their business, which was renamed Spahn Marine. Jean was a member of the Big Springs American Legion Auxiliary and later the Arthur American Legion Auxiliary. Her hobbies included camping, fishing, bowling, sewing, and gardening. Survivors include her husband Fred Spahn of Big Springs, one son John Spahn and his wife Linda of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters: Nancy Spahn of Fontanelle; Trish and her husband Matthew Meyer of Big Springs; two brothers: Clarence Palu of Madrid and Ivan Palu of Grant; two sisters: Clementena Thompsen of Brule and Eleanor Jackson of Sacramento, Calif.; one grandchild: Carmen and her husband Eric Robinson and two great-granddaughters Courtney and Cayleigh, all of Greeley, Colo. Preceding her in death were her parents and a sister Cashmere Westerbuhr.
