Description	:	(1st) Reuben Cash and Ellen Ann Alverson married 5 Jul 1857 in Newburgh, Orange, New York according to the Cash family bible. They had four children - (1) Frank Cash born 5 Apr 1859 - died 7 Apr 1859. Born, died and buried in Newburgh, Orange, New York. Williams according to the family bible. MILITARY Note: Reuben enlisted in New York City 17 Oct 1861 for a period of three years. He was on the Muster Roll for Capt. Smith's Battery, NY Artillery, which subsequently became 4 Independent Battery, NY Light Artillery (Co. 4th LA Reg. NY), 25 Oct 1861 through Apr 1863. He deserted 3 Jul 1862 returning to duty 8 Aug 1862 with his absence satisfactorily explained. He did duty as a wheelwright and carriage maker. He deserted 22 Aug 1863 at Washington, D.C. His grave has a plaque on it for Veteran 1861-1865. In 1882 the present Presbyterian Church, Niobrara, Nebraska was built by Reuben Cash at a cost of about $2,500. In 1884 windows were purchased for $107. Probably the stained glass windows still in the church. The church was organized in the old town November 12, 1880 by the Rev. George Williams, a Home Missionary among Standing Bear's people." From Niobrara Centennial Book: "1895 - Mr. Reuben Cash agreed to build the Episcopal Church for $1600 to be completed by the middle of September, 1895. Foundation laid July 13, 1895. OBITUARY: Niobrara Tribune October 7, 1915: OLD PIONEER GONE TO REST. Reuben Cash, a resident of Niobrara for thirty-seven years, passes away. Reuben Cash, an old and respected citizen of Niobrara, passed away at his home Saturday morning at one o'clock of illness subsequent to the infirmities of old age. Mr. Cash was born in Rockland County, NY, August 14, 1835. At an early age he went into a cabinet maker's shop, where he secured funds to further his education in architecture. At the age of twenty-six he joined the 4th NY light artillery and served during the Civil War. After returning he followed his trade in Cold Spring, NY. He was Past Grand Master of Philipston Lodge No. 236 of that place and had the distinction of being one of the speakers at the dedication of the Masonic Temple in NY City, June 2, 1875. (NOTE: I wrote to Masonic organization and they could find no record of Reuben Cash being a speaker at this dedication). He was active in Masonic circles, but as his family grew older his interest centered in them and for years they have been his world. Of late, as his health began to fail he called for them constantly and they, with their aged mother, ministered to his wants, making his last days as pleasant as loving care could do. In 1878 he became interested in western literature sent out by Ed A. Fry of Niobrara and in March of that year he came to this place, taking up a homestead south of town. The following year his family joined him. His family lived on the farm and he secured a position with Dr. A. L. Riggs at Santee, where he worked about fifteen years. He also built many residences in Niobrara, also the Episcopal church. He was a master mechanic and one of the few in this part of the country. He was always honest and upright and his life is exemplified in his children. The following is a tribute written by Mr. Frederic B. Riggs of the Santee Normal Training School: 'An Appreciate. Mr. Reuben Cash was a faithful friend to all those with whom or for whom he worked. Their interests were always his. He was patient and earnest and skillful in his work. We are reminded of Paul's advice in his second letter to Timothy: "Give diligence to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed.' Mr. Cash naturally inclined to be and should have been a Christian though we do not know his declaring himself. It is sad that the Christian churches lost the help they might have could thousands of such loyal spirits come into their membership. Mr. Cash worked for many years at the Santee Mission school and my father, principal of the school, had the greatest confidence in him. His work was always well done. It was never his own convenience, but the interests of the institution which Mr. Cash seemed to have in mind. This last summer my father engaged one of Mr. Cash's sons to repair a distant chapel. Two of the sons worked on it, and they have grown up, under their father's instruction, to be skillful workmen. But Mr. Cash was anxious lest the job might not be done just as his friend Dr. Riggs would like to have it. So he insisted on the boys taking him, feeble old man tho he was, over many miles of rough road that he might see for himself that the work was well done. Mr. Cash was a natural mechanic and he had moreover thoroughly learned his trade under the apprentice system in old New York state, before he came west many years ago. He was a trusted locomotive engineer on a Hudson river road for several years. He excelled as a carpenter and builder. He was particular and exact. He seemed to study every movement so that tho he apparently was working slowly he turned out his work very rapidly. I used to watch him with great interest. For many years I have been trying to stir up in our school pupils an appreciation of true industry and I have often told them of our good friend, Mr. Cash; how he worked easily but swiftly, how he evidently had his mind all the while on every movement so that he made no false motions. Now tho we mourn the loss of this faithful friend, we rejoice that in so many ways he set us all a good example. His children should find in the memory of his life a legacy that should enrich theirs. And we feel that whereas Mr. Cash was a workman here that needed not to be ashamed in the Lord's good providence there will be a place for him 'over yonder'.' Besides his wife he leaves to mourn his loss six children: Miss Ada, Robert, Joseph, Walter and Mrs. Henry Gadow, all of Niobrara and Mrs. Kate M. Robinson of Verdel. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday morning at 10 a.m. Rev A. F. Kelly officiating. Interment was made in L'Eau Qui Court cemetery. The tribune extends heartfelt sympathy to the family in the loss of a faithful husband and a loving father."
