George Washington Israel, youngest son of Robert and Mary Israel, was born near Green's Bridge, Howard County, Md., October 27, 1813, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. Z. Green, near Boyd's Montgomery Co., Md., November 25, 1891. Early, while residing with his brother in Washington, D. C., he was converted, and at once sought connection with the church. He was admitted to Baltimore Conference on trial in 1838, and thereafter passed duly to orders. His fields of labor were: 1838, Calvert Circuit, Md.; 1839, St. Mary's, Md.; 1840, Fairfax, Va.; 1841-1842, Rock Creek, Md.; 1843, Lancaster, Va.; 1844-1845, Augusta, Va.; 1846-1847, Rockingham, Va.; 1848, East Rockingham, Va.; 1849, Ebenezer, Washington, D. C.; 1850-1851, Montgomery, Md.; 1852, Agent of Wesleyan Female Institute, Staunton, Va.; 1853-1854, Shrewsbury, Pa.; 1855-1856, Baltimore Circuit, Md. While in the last Charge his nervous system became so seriously affected that at the Conference of 1857 he superannuated. Some years later his health improved, but not sufficiently to resume the pastorate. Possessed of some land, he found occupation in directing and assisting in its cultivation, and from its yield, supplemented by provision of Conference, he had a modest competence for himself and his interesting family. February 23, 1843, he married Miss Sarah Roszell Woodward, of Georgetown, D. C., granddaughter of the Rev. Stephen George Roszell. Three sons and two daughters were born to them. Two sons preceded them to heaven; the elder, bearing his father's name, and with quite his father's talent, was an alumnus of Dickinson College, and at his death was Professor of Natural Science in Washington City High School The elder daughter, with whom his home has been since the death of his wife in 1887, is the wife of A. Z. Green, Esq., of Montgomery Co., Md., and the younger the wife of the Rev. A. Bielaski, of Baltimore Conference. Brother Israel had an intellect remarkably acute, with a temperament conducive to its largest efficiency. Diligent in reading, alert in observation, and given to reflection, he was an adept in reasoning, both inductive and deductive. He seemed able to analyze and synthesize with remarkable thoroughness and rapidity. In a Conference trial, nearly forty years ago, this wonderful ability, with that of holding in thought the manifold particulars in any way affecting the question dealt with, and weaving them into a chain of invincible strength, had exhibition which gained him recognition as pre-eminently the lawyer of the Conference. He was brought into the case after the trial began, with no opportunity for preparation, and with the acknowledged leader of the Conference in opposition; but in its progress he manifested a legal acumen, a skill in handling witnesses and arraying testimony, and a force of argument, which against eloquence and sympathy determined the verdict. His discourse, always sound in doctrine, perspicuous in arrangement, and forcible in presentation, were adapted rather to profit the thoughtful than to please the multitude. Of decided conviction, and of better than Roman fortitude, he was inflexible in adherence to principle and truth. His loyalty to the Church was tested in the hottest of the border fires, and thereafter shone as burnished gold. During all the years of disability his affection for the Church was true. While never obtrusive, he was prompt to give counsel and cooperation to the pastors at and near his home; while to the last the Church at large enlisted his interest. He greatly enjoyed attendance at the recent world assembly of Methodism in Washington. During the month following he conversed almost daily with his family about the Conference and the many friends of other years he saw there. After some days of indisposition he suffered partial paralysis. From its effects he seemed measurably to rally, but said to his daughter: "This is the beginning of the end; it will attack my brain, and then I am gone." Meanwhile he was cheerful and sang much. In a few days there were signs that the home of thought was giving way. In an effort to sing, "Forever with the Lord," it was manifest that the imperial brain was no longer in command. At intervals during the four days he lingered there were faint flashes of consciousness, but no return of hope. It was the peaceful, painless ending of a strenuous and not unshadowed life.
