Description	:	Henry was the second child born to Martin and Catherine (O'Shea) Becker. On June 29, 1889, he was ordained Father Augustine at St. Benedict's Abbey in Atchison, Kansas. His first mass was performed on June 30, 1889 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Atchison. On March 2, 1896, he was forced to leave the St. Benedict's Diocese due to illness. On June 29, 1889, he was ordained Father Augustine at St. Benedict's Abbey in Atchison, Kansas. His first mass was performed on June 30, 1889 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Atchison. On March 2, 1896, he was forced to leave the St. Benedict's Diocese due to illness. He left in good standing, having received a special dispensation from Rome to leave the Diocese. He relocated to the Thurber, Texas area where he was incardinated into the Dallas Diocese. During this time he performed missionary work in various locations in the general area and lived in a wagon most of the time. An epidemic of typhoid fever hit the area in 1909 and Henry became ill with the disease as well. He entered the hospital on June 16, 1909 just days before he passed away. When Henry left Atchison and St. Benedict's, he lost his status as Father Augustine and became the Reverend Henry J. Baker. In acknowledgment of his missionary work while in Texas, Father Gerald Heinz, the Prior of St. Benedict's, had Henry's body returned to Atchison and buried at the Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery with the following inscription written in Latin: HERE IN PEACE SLEEPS HENRY J. BAKER, PARISH PRIEST OF THE CHURCH OF SAINT BARABARA IN THURBER TEXAS. BORN ON THE ELEVENTH DAY OF FEBRUARY 1860 ORDAINED PRIEST JUNE 29, 1889 HE DIED IN THE LORD ON THE 23RD DAY OF JUNE 1909 LOVING LORD JESUS GRANT HIM EVERLASTING REST
